SYTYCD – Finale

Well, I agree with Nigel about one thing: The finale was a little disappointing. Not the greatest night for anyone really, and not a very good night for the judges either. I think they tried to cram too many dances in: four dances for each finalist, plus a solo, is just too much. No one can perform at their best when they’re dancing that many times. Katie Holmes had very little to contribute as a guest judge, but really, what do you expect? Whose idea was it to bring her on, especially for the finale?  Not the best choice.

The only good part was the all-stars and, as expected, they were great. Mark Kanemura was especially awesome and it was great to see Joshua again too. I wish they would have done all of the dances with all-stars instead of having the contestants dance with each other at all. Read the rest of this entry

SYTYCD – Top 6

Next week is the finale so it’s crunch time and the guest judge is a real heavyweight: Christina Applegate(?). Some of her comments were great, but she seemed at a loss at times too. The judging adventures continue. There were lots of odd props in the dances tonight, as there have been all season: a wall, a towel, sticks, chairs, a mirror, a light fixture. I don’t know why props are so popular on this show, but some of them are truly silly, the sticks being probably the most pointless. Read the rest of this entry

SYTYCD – Top 8

You can tell things are getting serious on this show because they brought out the big guns as guest judges, which this week included Lady Gaga, of all people. She’s clearly a fan of the show and at one point even offered a job to Melanie. I was actually fairly shocked by her as a judge. She had substantive comments that were pretty interesting and not at all insane, unlike her outfit. She did make one comment to Nigel that was a little over the top, but apart from that, she was great. Read the rest of this entry

SYTYCD – Top 10

The all-stars are back and that means the contestants are competing as individuals now. I always like seeing the all-stars, but I have to say that sometimes breaking up the couples is a bit of a let-down, and I felt that way tonight at times. It was cool to see NPH as a guest judge, but I thought he would be funnier than he was. Read the rest of this entry

SYTYCD – Top 12

The guest judges this season are a trip. This week was Jesse Tyler Ferguson from Modern Family. He was pretty funny, and obviously a huge fan of the show, and he let slip that Neil Patrick Harris going to be a guest judge soon as well (Jesse called NPH “the mayor of Broadway”). I’m betting that will be a great show.

SYTYCD – Top 14

There were not as many strong dances this week, and I’m not sure what the deal was with having Carmen Electra (?) as a judge, but the best part of the show was unquestionably the Mandy Moore contemporary routine by Caitlyn and Mitchell:

SYTYCD – Top 16

It’s too bad that we lost the only ballroom dancer, the best tap dancer, the best hip-hop dancer and one of the best female dancers last week, but really, there were no really good choices for who to send home, and there still aren’t. More great dances happened this week, with two excellent NappyTabs numbers and two really great ballroom numbers from Jean-Marc. Here are the best of the best: Read the rest of this entry

My new favorite dancer

This isn’t a post about Paula Abduhl’s new show, although we can talk about it if you want. (I think it’s pretty fun.) No, this post is about b-boy, Cloud.

He’s the taller guy in gray:

The other guy, Differ, is really sick, too. But Cloud has such a unique style. Read the rest of this entry

SYTYCD – Finale

Ok, so who’s going to win? A lot of great dances happened last night and some interesting revelations along with some interminable and sappy blather from the judges. Here’s my rundown, followed by my prediction: Read the rest of this entry

I finally got caught up on past episodes (last week’s performance above) and watched the Top 4 as it was broadcast. I really thought this was going to be the finale, but I guess we still have another week. I’m not sure why we have a finale with 3 people when last season the finale had 6 (I guess because we have the all-star format), but to me it seems like the finals should have at least 4 contestants.
