Two more recent releases: Black Mountain and the Melvins

I’ve heard some praises for Black Mountain but have never really checked them out before. So I decided to check out their 2010 release, Wilderness Heart. I thought they were going to be a stoner metal band. But they’re more of a psychedelic, straight-up rock band…I’m actually having a hard time pinning down their genre.

Recent music releases: Iron and Wine, Jesu

I’ve been really out of it musically lately, so I decided to take a look around at what’s new the last couple months.

First recommendation: Iron and Wine‘s new album, Kiss Each Other Clean.

The Golden Globes

I didn’t actually watch the whole show, because there’s only so much celebrity ego-stroking I can stand, but I thought I’d do a thread on it. So I can complain to my heart’s content.

My new favorite dancer

This isn’t a post about Paula Abduhl’s new show, although we can talk about it if you want. (I think it’s pretty fun.) No, this post is about b-boy, Cloud.

He’s the taller guy in gray:

The other guy, Differ, is really sick, too. But Cloud has such a unique style. Read the rest of this entry

The Sing Off: What you might have been missing

Anyone been watching this acapella singing competition? I’m loving it. The live finale is on next week. So far, the judges–Ben Folds (!!), Nicole Scherzinger (Pussycat Dolls), and Shawn Stockham (Boyz II Men)–have been controlling who leaves the show, and I’d say they’ve made the correct picks. Now it’s narrowed down to four groups, which America got to vote on this week. And the winners will be revealed next week.

Here’s some of my fave performances from this season:

Check out what they do at the end of that song. Incredible.

Walking Dead – Ep 3: Tell it to the Frogs

I’m not capable of doing an involved play-by-play like Cantinflas’ awesome post last week, sorry.

This show may have lost me with this episode.

Youtube music night with the kids

I was bored last night so I had my sons join me for an evening of surfing music videos on youtube. We plugged a laptop into our TV and took turns choosing videos to watch.

I started off with U2 performing at the US Festival in 1983. It’s pretty amazing–Bono climbs onto the lighting rig above the stage with his white flag. Took me right back to being a teenager.

Of course, my sons are teenagers (well not technically, my oldest is 20 and my younger is 16), and all they did was make fun of it. They made comments about Bono’s mullet, etc.

Top Five songs with a fiddle

I’m a sucker for a violin. Also cello, and saxophone…but those are whole other posts.

Here’s my favorite bands/songs that use a fiddle:

The FYF Fest in Los Angeles 9-4-2010

I went to this festival last year to see Converge. It was really fun.

This year, there were even more bands on the bill I really wanted to see. Specifically: Local Natives, Ariel Pink, Ted Leo, the Mountain Goats, and SLEEP!
