Happy Birthday to Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros turned 25 yesterday. Now Mario himself is a bit older, having starred in Donkey Kong and Mario Bros prior to the release of Super Mario Bros, but Super Mario Bros is somehow special.

Not only did it start its own series of great games, but you could play pretty much the same game as the arcade version at home, which at the time was revolutionary. Add to this a world to explore, full of secrets, and amazing character and sound design and you have a classic.

Check out the ad that Nintendo released to commemorate the occasion.

(I’d embed the video but YouTube seems to be down today and Kotaku’s video isn’t embedable.)

Tap Studio Pro – Free Today

I found an interesting iPhone/iPod Touch game that is free today. Tap Studio Pro lets you create guitar hero/tap tap revolution style tap tracks (my term, not theirs) for the songs that are already on your device. You can then play the game with those tracks or search their online database for tracks that other people have uploaded for songs that you already have. Seems like a great idea: you get to use the music that you already like and if people make enough tracks there is the potential to have a lot of replay value. The server just stores the tap tracks, not the songs themselves, so there isn’t any copyright infringement going on. I assume that a tap track that someone created while listening to a particular song isn’t an infringing use.

I tried it out today and found it entertaining. The primary limitation was my own lack of ability to create a compelling track the first time through. I haven’t tried the online features yet, but thought I’d post this while the game is free.

Real Dr Pepper Available Locally!

Given that KB is 23 Flavors central I thought I should mention some big news: Dr Pepper is using actual sugar in its products to celebrate its 125th anniversary. So now lovers of the real DP Dr Pepper don’t have to get it shipped from Dublin Dr Pepper. We can just go buy a 12 pack from the grocery store. I suggest stocking up. I’ll check back in with a report once I find some.

Portal for Free

If any of you play video games and are very cheap you might be interested in knowing that Portal is free until May 24th. The reason is to promote the launch of Steam for Mac, but it is free for both Mac and PC. Here’s the link. That is all.

Battle for Vesta – Free Today

I’ve been wasting my spare time developing an iPhone game rather blogging. I’ve been reticent to post about it here since I don’t want to use KB to sell my game. However, today it is free, so I feel relatively unrestrained. So go grab Battle for Vesta while the price is right.

xkcd Comes to Life

I read and enjoy xkcd, a seriously geeky web comic. But somehow this had escaped my attention until now. Someone took a fairly lengthy strip and animated each panel. I present it for your geeky enjoyment. The prudish should note that it includes two scenes of stick figures writhing in bed, though covered by sheets.

A Fine Reason to Move to LA

There are some places in Utah with a good selection of soda, such as Liberty Heights Fresh, Pirate O’s, and there is a small soda shop in St. George that I discovered recently but can’t remember the name of. But there is nothing that I am aware of that is anything like Galcos Soda Pop Stop. Which reminds me that I need to order more Dublin Dr Pepper…

Why I Joined Facebook

I have never had any desire to join Facebook.  But over the weekend I was forced to.  I offer this post as a public service and warning to others.

Cowabunga Bay Water Park – Thumbs Down

The Cowabunga Bay Water Park recently sprouted up near my house. It is on a frontage road in Draper, UT, just north of 123rd South.  It looked like a lot of fun, with a giant maze of a tower and multicolored sliders sprouting in all directions:

Unfortunately it isn’t nearly as fun as it looks.

Thoughts Following a Battlestar Galactica Marathon

There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe, with tribes of humans who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians, or the Toltecs, or the Mayans. That they may have been the architects of the great pyramids, or the lost civilizations of Lemuria or Atlantis. Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man who even now fight to survive somewhere beyond the heavens…
