First cd was Technotronic, or Jane’s Addiction – Nothing’s Shocking. Can’t remember exactly. But I think it was Technotronic.

Great topic. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to remember this, but I’ll try to figure it out. As a child of the ’80s, by the time the Compact Disc came around, I already had an extensive collection of music on cassette.
Yeah Greg, me too, but I still remember that the first CD I bought was Fine Young Cannibals.
A Fresh Aire Christmas (in 1988, we were a little late to the party). If that doesn’t count, either Ancient Heart by Tanita Tikaram or The Best of Spirit.

Police–The Singles. Released in 1986, but I didn’t buy it until sometime around 1995, as a teenager. A friend convinced me to skip the tape and buy the CD even though my family (still) didn’t own a CD player. I bought it with a bunch of others (don’t remember which) through BMG.
I gave this some more thought and I think I’ve figured it out. The first CD I bought was probably while I was on my mission in Japan in 1991 or 1992. (I don’t remember owning a CD player before that.) I bought REM’s Out of Time, as well as an import CD-single box set from the Out of Time album. I also bought a copy of Fishcoteque by The Jazz Butcher. And I bought three different Japanese rock CDs, one each from The Blue Hearts (punk), Bowie (rock/pop) and Lindberg (J-pop/rock). Not exactly sure which of these came first. Probably Out of Time.
I had that one too, Ronan. Think my first was M.C. Hammer’s debut CD, in 1990. I went with my Dad to Best Buy, where we picked up a nice Sony carousel CD changer and such. He picked up some classical CDs, and I threw that on the pile.

First CD was Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto #1 – bought it in 1986 along with a portable CD player about an inch and a half thick with a gigantic attachable battery case. I still have both the CD and the player:

can’t remember the first. i think i actually joined the capital or bmg cd club thingy for my first dvd’s and got something like 13 for a penny! some of the early ones i remember getting are hang time by soul asylum, vivid by living color, ramones mania, mother’s milk by rhcp and never mind the bollocks, here’s the sex pistols.
Hang Time was a great album. Much better than their later adult-oriented alternative stuff.

totally agree. i think it’s their best album. i probably listened to it 200 times at least. i did that a lot when i was younger and didn’t have 50gb of music to choose from every day. when you were poor and could buy maybe two cd’s a month you tended to have a limited number of discs on heavy rotation. now i feel overwhelmed by all of the choices. just have to put it on shuffle since i don’t know what to listen to most of the time.
Springsteen’s Born in the USA. I worked most of the year and saved up the $500 to surprise my parents with a CD player for them for Christmas. They were really shocked. (This obviously was a long, long time ago) I remember they bought a bunch of CDs – primarily classical. CDs were really expensive at the time. I paid $19 for Springsteen’s CD and that was a lot of money back then. My secret shame is my second CD was Duran Duran.
3rd CD was Synchronicity though… I still listen to that one – albeit ripped as MP3s now.

My first record album was Pablo Cruise, Place in the Sun. My second was BTO, Four Wheel Drive. My third was Kansas, Point of No Return.
My first CD was Sarah McLaughlin, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.
Pablo Cruise to first CD = something like 17 years. First CD to now = right around 18 years. Ouch.
Amy Grant – The Collection. Sure, scoff if you want, but I have owned 3 different copies of this CD. Bought this one before I owned a CD player. (2nd CD – Back in Black)

Can’t remember my first cd; my first tape was Tears For Fears, Songs from Big Chair.
