TV Theme Songs
TV theme songs have gone downhill a lot from the classic halcyon days of yore in the 70s and 80s, but are now making a small comeback.
We’ve had the Gangstagrass stylings on Justified:
The Von Bondies manic theme on Rescue Me:
I also really like the Community theme song:
And now we have the cool new theme song from Suits by Ima Robot:

FX shows seem to have a knack for picking themes. Justified, Damages and Rescue Me are great, but my favorite recently was Terriers. It was on repeat on my ipod long after the show was gone.

Suits, Justified and Terriers were among those i was hoping would be on the list when i saw the link. also injoying the opening music to Misfits.

Just for the record, the Community song is “At Least it was Here” by The 88s.
Most shows have really shortened the intro since commercials are much longer now than in the 60′s through 80′s. I think Lost had the shortest one ever. But even ones with good songs usually only show snippets.
BTW – one recent one I liked was A3′s for The Soprano’s. I wasn’t really a fan of the show but the opening was great.
The opening for Dexter is fantastic not so much for the music but for how it really gets the character in a very creepy way while doing really mundane stuff.

There have been a few I’ve noticed and loved of recent shows. They Might Be Giants have a great one with Big Bang Theory.

I’m pretty sure there’s a show out there that uses a New Pornographers tune, or at least Carl Newman. Can’t remember what show it is.

Tom, there’s a T-Mobile commercial that uses the song Moves. Could that be what you were thinking about?
I’ve always been partial to the way Chuck uses the opening riffs from “Short Skirt, Long Jacket.”
What’s worse about confusing BNL is that they’re a Canadian band!!! How could I screw that up. Plus I listen to their kids album pretty regularly (it’s one of the few kid’s albums I can stand listening to with my kids).
The biggest reason I watched Taxi as a teenager was that I found the music so strangely comforting. It would come on after the local news. When that music would some on, I would snuggle down into my blanket and feel like all was right in the world. Weird, eh?
