Old Mascots

Who are your favorite old school mascots?  (And no I don’t mean football)

I’ve always had a soft spot for the original hamburgler.

  1. That was creepy. I like the old Kool-Aid guy, ’cause he was always making dramatic entrances. And Tony the Tiger had a grrrrreeAT voice!

However I’ve always hated the campaigns for Lucky Charms and Trix as they seemed to equate breakfast cereal with some form of dishonesty. Didn’t like that stupid bee for Honey Nut Cheerios either, though I lived on the cereal.

  2. You mean, like the Washington Redskins?

  3. Most of those old mascots were awful. They just retired the creepy Burger King dude, and good riddance.

Other than the obvious ones like Ronald McDonald, Tony the Tiger and Mr. Clean, there haven’t been that many advertising mascots that were very successful. Some were offensive or racist, some just annoying. A few were decent. Some that I recall:

    Frank Bartles and Ed Jaymes

    Spuds MacKenzie

    Budweiser Clydesdales

Buster Brown and his dog Tige

    Cap’n Crunch

    Energizer Bunny

    the GEICO cavemen

    Jolly Green Giant

    Punchy (the Hawaiian Punch Guy)

    Joe Isuzu

    Colonel Sanders

    Mikey

    Mrs. Butterworth

    Juan Valdez

The Man Your Man Could Smell Like

    Sugar Bear

    Qantas koala

    The Snapple Lady

    Wendy’s Founder Dave Thomas’

    Smokey the Bear

Most of the others you just wished would go away.

  4. I rather liked Charlie the Tuna, always running some kind of scam (a la Phil Silvers) with the expressed purpose of getting eaten.

  5. The weirdest thing about that McDonalds video is the “Lone Jogger” t-shirt the hamburgler is wearing. What’s up with that? I guess they thought him too creepy as in the 80′s they completely redid the character giving him a friendly childlike face.

I can’t believe some of you guys hate so many mascots. I love them. It’s funny, the mascots are in some ways better childhood memories than any of the cartoons I used to watch.

The next best one is the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Come on. You hear that laugh and you know instantly what’s going on.

  6. I found the dough boy’s voice to be suspicious.
