Seconded on all counts, except maybe your pick for The Supremes. But hey, 9 out of 10 is so good, I shouldn’t quibble with the 10th.
Yeah, Love Child is no good. And for the Temps I would have gone with Papa Was a Rolling Stone.

Well, if you have better Supremes picks, post ‘em. What do you think this is? Yeesh!
Since I should be working, I’m going to generally agree. But for Stevie Wonder, as much as I love Superstition (I heard a bluegrass band cover it last week), Sir Duke is clearly one of the best songs in the history of music.

1. Merle Haggard: “Mama Tried,” and not just because it’s the only Hag song I know–that opening guitar riff just sounds like lonesome fugitive heaven to me.
2. The Supremes: “You Can’t Hurry Love,” one of my favorite songs of all time.
you, it’s awesome. [Sorry, K. Family show]
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwOU3bnuU0k&w=425&h=349%5D
(I don;t know Ray Charles or Linda Ronstadt well enough to do them justice)
9. Dolly Parton: “Jolene.”
10. Patsy Cline
1. Merle Haggard – Don’t know any.
2. The Supremes – Right now I have to go with “You Keep Me Hanging On” but any other day it’d probably be “Where Did Our Love Go”
http://www.dailymotion.com/embed/video/x1kzf2The Supremes -You keep me hanging on by LostPirate77
3. Jimi Hendrix – Watchtower
4. The Temptations – Papa Was a Rolling Stone
5. Earth, Wind, and Fire – September
6. Stevie Wonder – Living For The City
7. Ray Charles – Georgia
8. Linda Ronstadt – Love Has No Pride
I was obsessed with this song a year or two ago and played it on repeat for days, maybe weeks. 2:50 “I’ll fall down on my knees” – perfect song for her voice.
9. Dolly Parton – Jolene
10. Patsy Cline – Crazy
Written by Willie Nelson, but Patsy slays it.
Sad part about that video clip–she died when she was 30.
(Ouch, this one is going to be hard.)
1. Merle Haggard – no idea

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmE7tTzJkbU&w=425&h=349%5D
9. Dolly Parton – He’s Alive
(at the 4 minute mark, when the choir joins in, makes me tear up) **
10. Patsy Cline – Crazy? I fall to pieces? Not familiar with any others.
* I was surprised about the Temptations.I thought I’d know more of their hits.
** runner up, on the other side of things, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
Check out the Linda Ronstadt video I posted. She’s singing in a prison.
This should be labeled the R&B and C&W edition, not oldies.

10. Patsy Cline – pass
I don’t do country (exception: Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson), so there are a couple of holes:
1. Merle Haggard
2. The Supremes – The Happening
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VJnaULJZ6k&w=425&h=349%5D
3. Jimi Hendrix – Castles Made of Sand
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZywxsJtkw3A&w=425&h=349%5D
4. The Temptations – I Can’t Get Next to You
5. Earth, Wind, and Fire – September
6. Stevie Wonder – Sir Duke (today, but it could be different tomorrow)

9. Dolly Parton
10. Patsy Cline
HP,
Did you mean to imply that the version of Fire that was posted is your favorite? That was a very odd rendition. Hendrix seems completely disinterested and just wants to get it over with. This was somewhat apparent just listening to it, but when you watch him it is almost shocking.
For comparison:
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0MAfvY2LhA&w=425&h=349%5D
Nope. Just the song, not that version. I just pull versions off youtube quick as I can.
Note if I give you a version you don’t like (I’m HP), tell me (with a pointer, if possible).
Patsy Cline, to me, is one of those artists that everyone should love.
Earth Wind & Fire – That’s the Way of the World.
I agree with Susan on Patsy Cline.
What’s with all th love for Jolene? doesn’t anyone know any other Dolly Parton songs? I like her version of I Will Always Love You better than Jolene. I’m surprised that hasn’t been mentioned.
I thought of coat of many colors or even islands in the stream, but apparently everyone loves Jolene.
John C., thanks for the links to the great videos. I like them all.
For Dolly Parton, title track to Little Sparrow – bluegrass bit she released something like 8 years ago.
Those songs with Dolly, Emmylou Harrison and Linda Ronstadt are classic. They do a version of Feels Like Home – a Randy Newman song written for Bonnie Raitt – that I really like. Linda Ronstadt, especially, has a world class voice.
I love the idea of Merle Haggard, but am not real well acquainted.
Harrison sb Harris. eeeek.
Merle Haggard – nothing comes to mind
The Supremes – Where Did Our Love Go
Jimi Hendrix – Purple Haze
The Temptations – Papa Was a Rolling Stone
(Loved the Was (Not Was) version, too)
Earth, Wind, and Fire – September
Stevie Wonder – I Wish
Ray Charles – Night Time is the Right Time
Linda Ronstadt – Lush Life
Dolly Parton – I Will Always Love You
(HATED the Whitney Houston cover!)
Patsy Cline – Crazy
1. Merle Haggard – Mama Tried
2. The Supremes – Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart
3. Jimi Hendrix – Little Wing
4. The Temptations – (I Know) I’m Losing You
5. Earth, Wind, and Fire – Shining Star
6. Stevie Wonder – Higher Ground
7. Ray Charles – Let’s Go Get Stoned
8. Linda Ronstadt – pass
9. Dolly Parton – Coat of Many Colors
10. Patsy Cline – She’s Got You
