Idol: Rank ‘Em 1-3
Rusty has asked me to finish off the season and it seems like it has been a long one and getting longer by the minute. I think many were disappointed in seeing James leave as he was regarded as the frontrunner, at least among those who appreciate rock and roll. We are essentially left with two country singers in the top three, which is very unusual. Also unusual is the fact that two of the top three are women, but I consider that mainly a good thing.
As it is, it’s really hard to compare these performers. Scotty and Lauren are both country singers, but not in the same style, while Haley is primarily a classic rock/blues singer. All are talented in their own way, but I think you are bound to like the one that sings the kind of music you like, which says a lot about you but little about which one of these singers is the most talented.
It’s no secret that I’m not a country music fan, so Scotty and Lauren have not been at the top of my leader board ever, and they aren’t now either, but they had some good moments tonight.
This is the best of Lauren’s performances tonight, singing “If I die Young” by The Band Perry, and it was very good:

Love the song and she performed it well, despite one mistake near the end (she just stopped singing at one point).
Scotty’s best performance was probably Lonestar’s “Amazed”, which is a pop/country song and he performed it without leaning too hard on the country twang, which I liked.

I have to confess that I liked all of Haley’s performances a lot. All of those songs are favorites of mine and I thought she did them very well. I was a little uncomfortable during “You Oughtta Know” because that is a very raunchy song and she had to change the lyrics just to make it acceptable for TV. Not a good choice by the judges, to have her sing that, in my opinion. There are other songs on that same album that would have been better suited to the audience.
I loved that her Dad played guitar on her Led Zeppelin song, and thought she really nailed that performance, but the one I liked the most was Rhiannon, because she really made some interesting choices in her performance. She slowed the first verse way down, then picked the pace back up in the chorus. I thought it was cool. Let me know what you think:

So that’s my ranking. I wouldn’t mind seeing an all-female final, and I don’t have strong feelings about Lauren or Scotty either way, but I’m really hoping Haley makes it to next week, because I won’t have much interest in watching otherwise.

I checked the poll at Dial Idol and they have Haley leading by a large margin. Based on that, I’m predicting Haley in the finals against Scotty.
I like Lauren the best at this point. She has a nice tone to her voice. I actually meant to vote for her but forgot to.
I like Haley. I think it is mostly because I am a rocker. I agree the the judges blew it by picking the Morrissette song. I actually like all three personalities and so I would not mind any of them winning at this point.
While I enjoyed this year a lot, it seemed to be dying.
Top 3 should have been Casey, Pia and James. The only one of the three here that DESERVES to be there is Scotty, as he is that talented (regardless of your personal taste). Once Casey was booted I lost interest (either that or we had a new baby, but I’ll stick with the Casey thing).
It’s amazing to me that Haley is as controversial as she apparently is. From what I’ve read online, she has a lot of fans but akso a lot of haters. The folks at VFTW can’t even agree on whether they love or hate her.
I agree with Rusty on the ideal final three, but I like Haley about as much as I like Casey.
I don’t know why Haley bugs me but she does. I’m a huge Janis/Joss Stone bluesy rocker chick kind of fan but she bugs me for some reason. Maybe because she never actually does much rockin’.
AI jumped the shark the year they did “American Idol Gives Back.” I wonder how long before the X Factor sends it packing.
I dn’t know what X Factor is going to be like, but I think we’re reaching the saturation point on talent shows. I like The Voice better than AI so far, and it seems similar to the X Factor idea.
I’m looking forward to the new season of The Sing-Off. I like that better than AI too.
I don’t really like the format of the Voice, and it does sound like it’s more like the X Factor. I just want the focus to be singing and music and not all that other crap (teams, coaches etc). Although on the British version of the Voice they allow groups and not just individuals, which is cool.
Is the Sing Off the acapella one? I liked that too.
Yeah Sing Off = a capella. They’re doing auditions for that right now. Should be good, although Nicole is not coming back. I think she’s going to X Factorn or something.
The Voice had a duo called Ellenowen that just got kicked off, so they do allow things other than individuals.
