Foo Fighters – Wasting Light

We haven’t talked about Foo Fighters new album, Wasting Light, which was released a couple weeks ago, and which reunited Grohl with Butch Vig, the Nirvana producer. I was planning to do a post on it but then I saw them perform on Letterman and thought the videos of that performance were just awesome, so I’m posting one of them above. As with most Foo Fighters albums, this album has some great tracks and some that just are over the top.  One of the tracks, called “I Should Have Known” features Krist Novoselic on bass and appears to be a memoir of their former bandmate’s death, with Grohl repeatedly singing “I cannot forgive you yet.” Seriously. I think this album is one of the best albums this band has ever done.

My favorite track is the one above.  I also really like “Walk.” Let me know your thoughts on this new Foo.

  1. I’ve heard good things about it. Been meaning to check it out. Thanks for the reminder!

  2. Just so you know, the entire album was played on Letterman, and all the videos are linked to the one I posted, so that’s an easy way to hear the album.

  3. If you’re interested in some musical archeology, listen carefully to “Walk” (you can hear it better on the album version) and tell me where you’ve heard the lead guitar riff (not the rhythm riff Grohl is playing but the high lead) in the intro.

It has been played before in two other big hit songs, one recorded in 1999, and one in 2000.

  4. Just had a chance to watch the video you posted–man I love how that was filmed!

I think Dave Grohl is a better songwriter than Kurt Cobain, to be honest. Kurt was good but Dave has this way of creating songs that are melancholy and uplifting at the same time, and that’s pretty genius in my book.

  5. I agree, Susan. I have a lot of respect fr what Nirvana did, but I’m a much bigger fan of the Foo.

  6. Dave Grohl seems like a great guy and is plenty talented.

That said, all Foo Fighter albums sound the same to me. Own 1 or 2 and that will pretty much do it.

  7. I can see why you say that BTD but some of their songs are real stand outs to me. My fave is actually a non-single called “Stacked Actors.” I heard it was written about Courtney Love but who knows if that’s true.

  8. My favorite is Everlong. You can’t say that song sounds like every other song, by them or anyone else.

My Hero is also a standout. I could go on…

  9. I’m impressed that they are still making great music after 15 years. Not bad for a drummer.

I’m also glad they finally had a #1 album with this one. It’s about time; no one deserves it more.
