Foo Fighters – Wasting Light
We haven’t talked about Foo Fighters new album, Wasting Light, which was released a couple weeks ago, and which reunited Grohl with Butch Vig, the Nirvana producer. I was planning to do a post on it but then I saw them perform on Letterman and thought the videos of that performance were just awesome, so I’m posting one of them above. As with most Foo Fighters albums, this album has some great tracks and some that just are over the top. One of the tracks, called “I Should Have Known” features Krist Novoselic on bass and appears to be a memoir of their former bandmate’s death, with Grohl repeatedly singing “I cannot forgive you yet.” Seriously. I think this album is one of the best albums this band has ever done.
My favorite track is the one above. I also really like “Walk.” Let me know your thoughts on this new Foo.
Fictionist In the Final Four
Fictionist is a great local band from here in Utah which has made it into the final four bands in a contest to be on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. You can check them out and listen to their music here and on that same site you can help them by giving them your support to make the cover (do it, it’s easy!). You can read a great interview with them here. Tell all your friends and relations to vote for them so we can get this cool Utah band on the cover of Rolling Stone. Thanks!
Justified: Reckoning
What a fantastic episode. It did what I love Justified doing. It took you on a somewhat expected path but did so in some very unexpected ways. Lots of twists and turns and unexpected ways of dealing with the expected. Surprisingly the whole Winona subplot didn’t amount to much tonight. We also never saw the real resolution of last week. We know Raylan resolved the assassination attempts on his life but it would have been worth showing the inevitable conflict between Art and him over all this. I’d say we’d get that next week but judging by the ending tonight I think things are about to get out of hand. It’s probably just hard to fit all this stuff in an hour episode.
The best thing about tonight is that we know Raylan is out for revenge but he never quite tips over the edge into blood letting. He comes close in a pretty unexpected scene towards the end. Rather than just doing a recap I’m going to assume everyone watched it and highlight my favorite scenes. And the best one by far is the final confrontation between Raylan and Dickie. We knew it was coming. We know there’s a long history of bad blood here. Yet Raylan clearly just wants Dickie in jail and methodically goes about his police work to figure out who was behind Helen’s murder. He finally wraps it up after getting Mags to betray her own son. He and Doyle are walking away and then out of no-where he clips Doyle in the head. (That is a cliche of crime films but it never works in real life – you typically either hit them too hard doing brain/skull damage or even killing them or you just hit them hard enough to piss them off)

New Music: Augustana
http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1
Augustana is a band that evolves with every album, and their new self-titled album, out now, is no exception. We’ve talked about Augustana before here and here, and as previously noted, the band started out as straight-up pop-rock balladeers, but with their last album switched gears a bit into a bluegrass-influenced folk/americana sound. This new album continues in that path, while bringing along some of the pop hooks that brought the band fame to begin with. Read the rest of this entry
The Other Shows – Post Easter Edition
So folks were making comments to the Other Shows post from a few weeks ago. I figured I should make a new one. I’ve been swamped and other than getting a little closer to being caught up on Fringe and House I’m still plenty behind.
Shows I should be watching but haven’t even DVRed yet. Game of Thrones and The Killing. I’ve been hearing great things about both. Although some say that following Game is much easier if you’ve read the books. Also I’ve heard a few complaints that HBO is doing it’s Rome thing and just throwing in gratuitous nudity for no particular reason. Anyone watching these? I figure I’m so far behind I’ll just catch up later via Bit Torrent or Netflix.
Fringe I’ve been really enjoying this season although I’ve not yet hit the Leonard Nimoy episode everyone was grousing about. Now that the show is renewed for an other season I’m doubly excited. Yeah it’s one of those shows that requires a lot of suspension of disbelief in the science area. But if you can do it for Star Wars you can do it here.
Justified: Full Commitment
An other week an other great episode. The writing tonight was particularly great. At least as good as any this season.
What I loved about tonight were all the little moments between characters. Once again a lot said that isn’t said. A feature pretty common in this show and quite difficult normally to pull off.
We start out with Raylan giving statements to the FBI and find out the assassins were former soldiers. Raylan is distracted though by Gary talking to Winona. Gary’s whole personae has changed and Raylan is suspicious. (Justifiably as we discover) More interesting is Art’s treatment of Raylan – ordering him off the case and having Tim be a minder. Tim is one of those characters on the show we’ve not seen a lot of. I kind of wish we had. Hopefully next season. Of course as expected Raylan isn’t going to take Art’s orders sitting down. The banter between an obviously frustrated Tim and Raylan is pretty funny. Yet there’s a lot of tension going on. The directors and writers know that the way to play an Elmore Leonard character is to make it straight and somewhat tense with the humor being a kind of surface thing hiding utter seriousness. It’s a hard line to walk. (Note the difference between Get Shorty and Be Cool for examples of how to do it and how not to do it)
What I really love about these scenes that continue through the episode is that Raylan always plays it straight with Tim but Tim isn’t willing to give a wink and a nod to pretense. Is this a sign that Tim knows something is up with Raylan on the missing money issue? I suspect so. All the characters are smart and Raylan wasn’t exactly being subtle. (Which is why Art figured things out fairly quickly) The real issue is what they think of Raylan. As you might recall Art wasn’t exactly happy that Raylan was back with Winona at the beginning of the season. Is Winona bad news? I suspect there’s more to learn there.

Justified – Debts and Accounts
The name of this episode is, once again, significant in more ways than one. Mags is despondent over Coover’s death and wants to “settle accounts.” She meets with Raylan’s aunt, who is apparently representing the Givens side of things. After some talk, Mags is apparently convinced not to go after Raylan for the killing. She also shares the Black Pike money. Before leaving the bar, she is confronted by a man who is upset about her selling out to the mining company. She warns him in front of a bar full of people that he will be killed if he speaks to her like that again. Don’t mess with Mags. Read the rest of this entry
