American Idol Rebooted
I have been watching American Idol, mostly out of a morbid curiosity that drives me to see what the new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will be like. Well, none of my predictions have proved accurate about these two. Steven Tyler is an absolute joy to watch. He’s maybe the most entertaining thing on TV right now. There’s no predicting what he will say next and his genuine love of people and music is just infectious. JLo is a thousand times better than Paula Abdul, but seems to occupy the same psychic space on the panel: emotional heart. Even Randy seems fresh sitting next to the two newbies. This is better than AI has ever thought of being before.
I’m not saying it couldn’t still end up as a train wreck, but so far, it’s really fun to watch.

I agree. I thought the show would be toast without Simon but I actually don’t miss him at all. Funny that Randy’s become the harsh one.
I actually got tears in my eyes last night when Steven Tyler kissed the woman in the wheelchair and told her her fiance sings so well because he sings to her.
And it’s Steven, you know. Not Steve.
It’s definitely not the same without Simon but I’m glad they went in a different direction than try to find another snarky judge to fill the role.
I think JLo has been kind of meh though the first episode with her trying to let people down early was humorous.
Steven Tyler has been great. Just watching his reactions to some of the really outstanding performers has been worth it.
Here’s the clip Susan was talking about.

What I’m going to miss is Simon being 98% accurate. Some other person (Randy or other) being “harsh” has little interest to me….it is just someone being mean. Over the years I haven’t agreed with Randy’s assessment nearly as often as Simon’s so I disregard his opinion. I cared what Simon said…..who really cared what Paula ever said? And Randy?
Even the contestants cared more about what Simon said.
I didn’t always agree with Simon so that doesn’t bother me. It’s not like the judges have any input once the top 20 are chosen, anyway.
I dunno, Steven Tyler’s Creepy-Old-Man moments always kinda ruin it for me.
I agree that Simon was generally the voice of plain unvarnished truth, but so what? It’s a TV show and the point is to be entertaining. Tyler and JLo are entertaining in ways the show hasn’t been before. Ever.
Tyler is definitely crushing on young girls at times, and if that makes you throw up a little, you’re not alone. But those moments are far fewer than you might think and are far outweighed by the fun moments so far.
