2010 Albums and Songs of the Year

I know we discussed this under Susan’s post but I thought the music derserved it’s own post (also, Susan’s post was on December 2, which is way too early!). Read the rest of this entry

Best Gym Music?

GymSo I started my resolution early this year. At the beginning of December I started going to the gym every morning at 8:30 for about an hour or so. I’ve been really good about it. Like most starting out I’m embarrassed at how out of shape I’ve gotten the past few years. (Kids, sleep depravation, starting a business, and having only one car made working out difficult) But now I’m doing it.

I’m one of those guys who really can use the extra energy boost of good music. It seems that, especially on those final sets of weights, it just gives me that little bit of extra oomph.

Here’s my dilemma though. My current music mix sucks. Oh there’s some good stuff. The obligatory Rage Against the Machine and AC/DC. A little Death in Vegas. But I found, much to my shock, that my music tastes the past decade have moved quite a bit more towards more acoustic and neo-folk stuff. Working through my iTunes collection I found it harder to find good stuff to work out with. (In part due to a double hard drive failure about 7 years ago which led to half my music getting lost)

So here’s the question. What are the tunes you think are best for really getting pumped at the gym? I don’t even care the genre. I have hip hop, electronica, grunge, industrial, metal, boogie woogie and a lot else already in my mix. Read the rest of this entry

Best party game?

I meant to get this an open discussion started weeks ago, when it would have been more timely. But it’s not too late, I figure. Like many people, one of the highlights of the holiday season for me is staying up late playing games with family and friends. And there’s still time for that, right?

Based on recommendations here at Kulturblog (and especially Bret’s very informative posts), last year we picked up Wits and Wagers, which has proven to be a solid game-night player. Anything else out there? I personally prefer the casual games that don’t require hours of playing time and can accommodate large groups. (We’ve also enjoyed Ticket to Ride, but it’s probably near my limit in terms of a required time commitment.) I’ll listen to all sorts of recommendations, though, and it goes without saying that it’s not all about me.

Disjointed Thoughts From Christmas Morning

As I sit in with an exhaustion headache trying to vainly take a nap a few things came to me. Maybe you’ll learn from my mistakes. Maybe not. Maybe you’ll throw in your own exhausted wisdom.

1. You know that toy you got so cheap on black friday? The race track that was less than 1/3 the price of a new one? Guess what. It’s a cheap Chinese knock off and there’s a reason they could sell it so cheap. Yes, they still are making a profit. (Cue demonic voice from Evil Dead 2: “Dead by dawn! Dead by dawn!”) I should have learned after I got that $1000 scooter that seemed like such a good deal. It was great the first year and then started to break down every few weeks. Every time I’d go into the shop I’d find out some part was amazingly substandard. Eventually I just gave up repairing it.

Lesson? It’s better a few expensive quality toys than a bunch of cheaper ones. (Note: this isn’t a knock against China. After all the high quality stuff is probably made there too – my iPhone was after all)

Kubrick: Best and Worst

KubrickBy popular demand, a Kubrick post to deal with some of the discussions raised in the Spielberg post. I have to admit I’m not a huge Kubrick fan and there are plenty of his films I’ve not seen. So I’ll just do a single best and worst to be fair. However one of my top three movies of all time, 2001, is a Kubrick film. Further one of the very, very few horror movies I liked was The Shining. I’m thus a bit partial to Kubrick even though to me he’s not in the Spielberg, Hitchcock, Ford or Huston ranks. Simply because I don’t think Kubrick is that approachable. His films typically have a kind of distance from the audience along with a coldness that makes it hard to love. There’s a methodological reason for this of course. However it certainly makes it hard for the average viewer to get enraptured with Kubrick. Add in the ridiculously slow pace and its no surprise why so few like him.

All that said, here are my picks.

The Sing Off: What you might have been missing

Anyone been watching this acapella singing competition? I’m loving it. The live finale is on next week. So far, the judges–Ben Folds (!!), Nicole Scherzinger (Pussycat Dolls), and Shawn Stockham (Boyz II Men)–have been controlling who leaves the show, and I’d say they’ve made the correct picks. Now it’s narrowed down to four groups, which America got to vote on this week. And the winners will be revealed next week.

Here’s some of my fave performances from this season:

Check out what they do at the end of that song. Incredible.

Well, this sucks.

SyFy has canned Stargate Universe, the strongest of the Stargate series and one of the best shows currently on TV. I hate SyFy so much.

Spielberg: Best and Worst

Spielberg’s a remarkably prolific director. (Although he’s slowed down of late) Throw in all the movies he’s produced and it’s frankly amazing. what’s even more amazing are how many of his movies are great films. He probably has a better batting average for movies than any other director I can think of. (Including Hitchcock, Huston or Ford, the only other directors I can think of that come close to Spielberg)

So what are your favorite Spielberg films and which do you think are his worst?
