Dr Pepper Warning

Given that I encouraged everyone to go buy 125th Anniversary Dr Pepper, I feel it is my duty to warn you of a bait and switch.

Originally 125th Anniversary packaging indicated that the Dr Pepper it contained was made with REAL SUGAR. This is no longer the case. Now we have wolves in sheep’s clothing. They are using the 125th Anniversary packaging but sweetening (and flavoring) the drinks with high fructose corn syrup.

So consider yourselves warned. The Dr Pepper renaissance was nice while it lasted.

  1. While I love Mexi-Coke way more than US HFCS Coke, I found the 125th Anniversary DP to be far too sweet; I couldn’t taste the bitter notes that make DP so pleasant. Sugar water. Blech!

(Which means I still have about 20 cans of the stuff that I’ll never drink!)

  2. RIDICULOUS!!

  3. Brian J, send it to me, please, but only if it’s the real sugar stuff.

  4. Nothing will ever beat the sweet natural taste of aspartame.

  5. We actually saw a little soap boxing in Law & Order SVU recently about the HFCS vs. cane sugar debate.

We wonder who is behind the whole “debate” and what they seek to gain from it. Cane sugar growers who are hoping to see a spike of demand for their product they can charge premiums on?

In the end, there’s no real evidence that corn syrup is inherently more bad for you than sugar; the calories are about the same.

P.S. I prefer Splenda, wish they could make an original-formula Coke or Dr Pepper using it instead of sugar.

  6. It just tastes better, FHL. A lot better, in my opinion. I usually drink diet drinks, but for drinks made with cane sugar, I’ll take the calories because they taste so good.

  7. FHL do you remember what episode of SVU that was?

  8. FHL,

I’m not expert, but there was a compelling study on rats out of Princeton recently that showed that HFCS is worse for you than cane sugar.

I could go on about mono vs di-saccharides and digestion but I’d be babbling nonsense.

For me the taste is the primary concern. The politics of corn are secondary, and the health concerns (while real in my opinion) are unfortunately behind even the political ones.

Corn is artificially cheap in this country and real sugar is artificially expensive. This is a ridiculous situation that we have due to politics.

  9. Susan, title is Wet, the victim works for a cola company.

Sure, I read the results on wikipedia :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hfcs

I feel like the studies fall on both sides, not really conclusive.

I don’t really care, just curious about the furor.

  10. Sugar only has one ingredient: sugar cane.

HFCS has many ingredients, but the main ingredient is: EVIL

  11. I saw some sugar the other day that had no cane in it. Just beets. Wow. And in Burley, ID of all places.

  12. I thought Idaho was known for sugar beets. And potatoes.

I know a guy (online) who writes for SVU but he didn’t write that episode. What cracks me up is one of the writers for that episode uses the name Speed Weed.

  13. Clark isn’t aspartame the stuff that causes anal leakage?

  14. Anyone else remember the commercial that Nutrasweet had on TV shortly after aspartame hit the market, featuring a kid eating bananas and milk?

    Hey, here it is:

  15. Hmm.

I gave up drinking carbonated beverages about 10 years ago, so this doesn’t affect me in the least.
