Idol: Pick Yer Winner
Last night’s performances:
2) Lee
1) Crystal
Overall:
2) Crystal
1) Lee
I don’t know what was up with Lee last night but he sure seemed nervous or something, especially that last song. And not a good song for him to sing, by the way. Beautiful Day? Come on. And Crystal’s final performance was beautiful, one of her best. I thought it was pretty clear the judges last night liked Crystal more. Over the course of the show I think Lee has been a better performer, though Crystal has been more consistent. But you have to know at this point it doesn’t matter one bit who wins. They both have to know it as well, they’re both on their way to success in the industry. And I really believe that too, Crystal has the potential to carve out her own niche and Lee has the potential to take advantage of his very commercial talent and appeal. Tonight’s final vote is a crapshoot. Who knows who will win, but who cares. I know there are those who would prefer their favorite to NOT win, which is understandable. But I’m cheering for Lee.

I don’t care who wins. Happy the two best made it to the final.
Lee’s “Boxer” was his best song last night. The judges said it didn’t have enough energy but I really liked it. He should never have done REM or U2, bad choices all around.
Crystal doing Alana Miles was just sort of meh to me. Her final song was the best of the night by far.
Sadly, both REM & U2 were chosen for him, so I think he did fine (emphasis on fine) with both of them (and really? A U2 cover as his first single? Granted, covers are better than the puppies and rainbows song they usually have, but it seems…weird). Though I don’t think ANYONE should EVER cover that REM song. EVER. Punishable by death. Or something…
Sadly, they chose Black Velvet for Crystal, which, also, should never be covered either. Just so no one ever has to hear it again…
Kinda a meh night. I think Lee will take it, though, for a variety of reasons.
I still don’t like Lee’s version of “The Boxer”. It needs to go LA-la-la BOOM. Not LA-la-la nothing. Just kind of lifeless.
I thought Everybody Hurts was a pretty decent song choice. But again, Lee has a problem starting soft and then giving the song a proper crescendo and climax. He just wants to get right to the point too quickly.
And I kind of groan every time Kara admiringly call Lee “commercial.” While it may be true, it would suck to hear that.
Yeah, I was kind of disappointed in the whole night. I was really hoping for something great from Lee and just didn’t get it, though I don’t think he was terrible. The highlight of the night for me was Crystal’s last song. I thought it was her best performance of the season, and maybe the best by anyone. I’ve been hoping Lee wins for a long time, but I’d be ok with either one now. I usually don’t watch the results shows, but I’ll probably watch tonight.
Tim, I think you’re prejudiced by the Simon and Garfunkel version of that song. I think that the booms are their signature and should never be imitated.
Ok, that was a really weird results show, though it was kinda cool to see some of those old artists. I was surprised to see Brett Michaels, I thought he was in the hospital.
All the stuff with Simon was really strange, especially Paula. Simon has been a great judge and probably the show would not be what it is without him, but it was still a bit much.
I’m glad Lee won, as I have been rooting for him all season, but I think Crystal deserved it as well. Wow, what a circus that show was, though.
Nobody, and I mean nobody, does awkward like Idol.
Amen to that, Tim!
And now…on to SYTYCD tonight. The real reason to be glad Idol is over!
I couldn’t believe Janet Jackson was on.
What a cheesefest the whole night was. One big reason I love AI.
Most of the performers were so old. “Joe Cocker is still alive?!” – my husband. A lot of them have lost their voices.
Christina Aguilera was a surprise, too. When all the Idol girls were singing her songs I kept thinking how when she comes out she’s going to blow them away. And she would have if she could manage to sing a single note instead of 20 million in one syllable.
A double amen to that Tim. Painful.
Good on Lee, though.
And farewell to Idol. I’m probably not going to care next year, maybe I’ll watch a couple audition episodes to see how they try to do it without Simon, but I’m not counting on being invested.
I think they have a real opportunity with the new judge. If they make a bad choice, it could really spell the end for Idol. They need to make some other changes though:
- Get rid of Seacrest and have Ellen take over hosting. Ryan brings absolutely nothing to the table and Ellen is out of her element at the judges table. This would also get us back to three judges.
- Show more of Hollywood week. Also, pair it down to the top 20 instead of top 24.
- Go from top 20 to top 10 and drop the requirement of half guys and half girls. Just take the 10 best. Give the judges some power to decide with the audience who makes the top 10.
- Stop with the “old” theme nights. Or get rid of the themes altogether and let the contestants pick their songs. Or have themes (broad ones) in the round of 20 and then give the top 10 freedom to choose.
Any thoughts on the fact that Lee’s “new” single is a cover?
Pro: We don’t have to hear some awful song that someone cooked up the week before.
Con: Its a cover!
Solution: They should have a parallel contest show about song writing…
In short – why would I listen to the Lee version? Over U2, Bono?
You wouldn’t, but that hasn’t ever stopped insecure record label execs from forcing young artists to put covers on their debut albums, and it probably never will.
