American Idol: Top 16

The girls have voices I like better than the guys, but the guys sing on key better.

Aaron: I’m Already There
This was painful. I can’t believe the judges had such good remarks for him. And I agree with Kara, he was too young for this song.

Alex: Trouble
I’m rooting for Alex now. I don’t think he really quite pulled off this song (one of my fave songs of all time) but it wasn’t painful.

Andrew: Genie in a Bottle
I liked this a lot. I think the judges are being too hard on him. He did what they asked for and they complain about it. There’s been a lot of that this season so far.

Casey: You’ll Think of Me
I thought Casey did really well, but I don’t know this song and can’t remember it now. So Simon was right about it not being memorable. But Casey seems much more comfortable performing than most of the other guys.

Lee: Fireflies
I don’t really know this song either, but I thought he was smart to choose a softer song and use his rock voice on it.

Michael: This Woman’s Work
1. This is a Kate Bush song, Maxwell just covered it. (Hate it when they don’t be specific about stuff like that!) 2. Maxwell’s version is stupendous. 3. Michael’s was really good. Best performance of the night, and maybe the season.

If you’re not familiar with Maxwell’s version:

Michael didn’t do the whole thing in falsetto, I noticed.

Tim: Hallelujah
I was wincing hard when Ryan said he was doing Jeff Buckley’s version of this song. No one can touch Jeff Buckley. But I was surprised–I didn’t think it was horrible.

Todrick: Somebody to Love
As a general rule, never touch Queen. Unless you’re Adam Lambert. But I was surprised by Todrick–it wasn’t painful. He sang it well. My husband, the biggest Queen fan I know, kept complaining because when Freddie sings it, it starts out in the ground, and by the end, it’s up in the heavens. (His words.)

Crystal: Give Me One Reason
Whenever I hear Crystal sing I keep thinking she’s light years above the other girls. Her experience shows. She’s confident and ON KEY. Still my favorite.

Didi: Rhiannon
I thought this was going to be painful but it wasn’t. I’m glad, I like Didi and want her to do well.

Katelyn: I Feel The Earth Move
I wanted this to be good and it just wasn’t. Carole King is rarely a good choice.

Katie: Breakaway
Unremarkable.

Lacey: The Story
She’s finally starting to shine a little bit. I don’t know this song but thought it fit her voice well.

Lily: I Fall to Pieces
Patsy Cline? Really? Turning this song into a cutesy thing was not a good idea, IMO. But I like Lily.

Paige: Smile
Talk about painful. I couldn’t hack it, had to fast forward it. I think Paige is going home.

Siobhan: House of the Rising Sun
When she said this was a song her father taught her I thought, bad idea to do a song just because it has some personal meaning for you. Just because you have a history with it doesn’t mean it suits you or is a good choice for the competition. But I thought it was really good.

Who do you think is going home?

  1. I dunno, I thought Andrew was ok, but sounded flat. Simon was right that he made the song sound like it was about three notes.

  2. SG’s watching American Idol now?

I think Aaron should go but will probably stay. I think either Todrick or Tim join him.

This is definitely Crystal’s competition to lose, though I wonder how well she’ll handle some of the themes and what will happen if forced to give up her guitar.

  3. I’ve been known to dabble.

  4. Shouldn’t this be Top 16, not top 24?

  5. Yes, thanks. I forgot to double-check what number we’re on. Post is edited.

  6. Alex seems very nasal to me. I just don’t like his voice.

I love Lee because he sings my kind of music, and he does it very well. I could listen to him all night. He’s not an amazing talent, just a hard workin’ rocker from Chi-town. He’s cool.

Michael was better than Maxwell on that Kate Bush song. Just awesome, but I think he can be even better.

On the girls side, Didi is just it for me. Love her. I don’t think anyone can touch her. I can understand those who like Crystal, and I think she’s good, but I’m just a bigger fan of Didi. Awesome version of Rhiannon. I appreciate that song in a whole new way now, and I think that’s what this competition is about: taking a great song and making it your own.

  7. Check out this bad live video of Lee performing at a liquor store.

Even though the quality of the video is awful, he sounds pretty darn good. Here’s a prediction: Lee will bust this song out on AI and it will bring the house down. He will kill it. I think he’ll be in the final four for sure.

  8. American Idol is crap and not worth watching. Just my pot-stirring opinion.

  9. It’s funner to talk crap about it if you’ve actually seen it, though.

  10. Way to stir the pot Ben, you sly dog! Now shut it.

  11. AI IS crap and not worth watching.

That said, I agree MCQ. I like Didi better than Crystal who is rubbing me the wrong was (personally, not vocally).

I also like Lee and Mike.

Other than that I don’t really care. Oh, wait. I like Lacey. On paper. Sometimes. But it might just be that I want her hair and she was told to sing The Sundays.

  12. I think Randy told Lee to sing KoL a couple weeks back. I agree he should save it for a few weeks. He and Crystal are definitely the most recordable of the group.

I think Didi’s a sleeper but she’s been inconsistent so far. She’s one of those that could get lost on the big stage.

I think Michael has found his niche after the past couple weeks losing the guitar.

  13. I’d like to see Lilly do Feist.

  14. I’m sure you would Tim, but come on, keep your mind out of the gutter. This is a family blog!

  15. I’ve been pretty bored so far this season and have FFed my way through a lot of the performances. I thought I might just pick it up again when they got to the top 12 or 10, but maybe I’ll have to at least watch Michael’s performance from this week. I do like him. He’s a very likeable guy.

(That Maxwell version is good, but I still prefer Kate’s.)

  16. I prefer Kate’s, too, but Maxwell’s blew me away because it’s so unexpected.

  17. Ok, so I’m pretty fine with the people who got voted off tonight. Probably Paige should have gone instead of Lily, but you know, as long as Didi, Michael and Lee are still around, it’s fine. I’m also glad Tim gets more time to prove himself. I think he could turn out to be good.

  18. Paige definitely should have gone instead of Lily. But Patsy Cline was a bad choice. And maybe Lily’s kind of audience are not American Idol viewers. Or at least the kind of AI viewers that actually vote.

I’m sad to see Alex go.

  19. Was Alex mullet boy?

  20. Yeah, he looked a little like Leather Tuscadero from Happy Days, or like Leather met Jason Mraz and had a kid. He was obviously talented, but the judges were right that he looked like he wasn’t having any fun. I think that killed his chances at getting votes.

  21. I loved the mullet. But then my husband had a mullet a few years ago…you wouldn’t believe the comments he’d get. It was awesome.

  22. I am so bummed about Lily. She was one of my favorites.
