American Idol: top 24

What’d everyone think of the top 12 girls? I haven’t quite watched them all, but from what I’ve seen, it looks like a pretty disappointing group.

Except for Chrystal Bowersox, who completely rules. She sounded like a combination of Linda Perry and Ani DiFranco last night. I don’t think she sounded like Alanis, do you?

  1. Wait, that show is on again?

  2. While I think Chrystal is the favorite among the women (and maybe the whole group), I think she’ll struggle with either a weird category (Broadway, Disco, etc.) or when forced to give up the guitar.

  3. I think she sounded JUST like Alanis. I want to like her, yet don’t. Lovin the girl who sang Ingrid Michaelson, though. And yeah…they all kind of sucked.

  4. Are you familiar with Ani DiFranco and Linda Perry, gabby?

People are also comparing her to Melissa Etheridge, which I can see.

Before tonight I thought she was very Janis Joplin-ish. Kinda funny. She sounds like so many people at once.

There’s a couple girls I like but they did not do well last night at all. My other fave is probably the one you mention–but she did horrible last night. I’m listening to it now and at times it’s awful.

  5. Ooooh. Melissa Etheridge. Probably why I don’t like her!

  6. I just watched the women I missed, and Katelyn did well I thought. Although her song wasn’t a very good choice. Also the grey-haired lady, Lilly? I like her, but again I didn’t think she chose that great of a song.

  7. Susan,
Ellen is a fine person, but she’s terrible on this panel. I didn’t mind her in Hollywood week, but having to remark after every performance she just doesn’t know what to say. She isn’t in music so her musical feedback is basic layperson feedback, and she has very little to say beyond, “I like it,” or “you’re cute, I like you.” I think she’s going to drive me crazy this season. Ironically, I’m liking Kara much, much more this season than last. I wonder if it’s the absence of Paula that has helped her to have something to say.

Regarding the contestants, mostly terrible. Perhaps it’s an audio problem with the tv or something, but most of the performances have been really, really bad. There were only 2-3 performances of each group that were even passable. This could be a bad year.

  8. My husband was wondering why the singers aren’t using ear monitors so they can hear themselves. I’m thinking because so many were off key that it was an issue. But then this was the first night and nerves must be almost unmanageable.

I think having Ellen on was a big mistake (but then I figured American Idol jumped the shark with “Idol Gives Back” a few years ago), but I still like her and don’t mind having her there. I’ve actually been distracted a lot by the color of her eyes. Laser-beam blue.

Now about the guys: Casey was the only one who seemed like a pro. But I’m rooting for the Mexican kid from Huntington Park (which is not the same as Huntington Beach, where I live). And I thought Andrew Garcia did really well, he and Casey are my fave guys.

  9. Agree with Rusty on every point. And do they really need each judge to offer their opinion? It bogs down the show waaay to much.

The guy that sang the Fall Out Boy is still the favorite, IMO. And it was funny that the judges told him to do what we did with Straight Up, when that’s exactly what he did. He did choose one of the most annoying songs of the last decade though.

  10. There was a rumor floating around that when Simon leaves at the end of this season, Idol is going to replace him with Elton John. If true, I imagine that the producers may be reconsidering in light of the Big Gay Jesus remarks.

  11. My favorite is when they say that this is the most talented year ever. They say this every year. Yet, 80 percent seem quite horrible. I think they need to reconsider how they pick the top 24. Of all the people that tried out, is this really the top 24?

  12. No it’s not really the top 24 singers. It’s the top 24 that they cast based on lots of different criteria, not just singing. They always say “this is a singing competition,” but first and foremost it’s a TV show, and the participants are a cast as well as singers.

I wish they’d just end the show when Simon leaves.

  13. Thanks for posting this! My DVR didn’t record on Tuesday. I think she is awesome. I’ve liked her style and song picks. I don’t think she sounds just like Alannis. Each song she seems like she has her own niche and she can make her song picks fit her. Right now she’s probably my favorite.
