Robot Cake
It seems cake making has developed into a pop-culture trend. At least, that’s what I learned channel surfing of the Food Network. When not hosting celebrity chefs, reality shows, or travel programs featuring massive amounts of heart-unhealthy restaurant fare, the subject de jour seems to be cakes (see, e.g., Ace of Cakes). And the whole internet seems to enjoy looking at Cake Wrecks.
But really, this post is just using an excuse to show off a cake that Allison (erstwhile Kulturblogger and commenter) and I created for our three-year-old son. Behold, the robot cake:

We had fun making it, and I’m sure our kids will have fun eating it.
Anyone made any cakes lately? Is this really a trend, or is it just me?

That is awesome.
My girlfriend made me a cake shaped like rollerblades back in the day. It was sweet! (pun intended)
Thanks for Cake Wrecks, fun site!
Cake Wrecks rules and I follow it daily. Good cake by the way!
This reminds me of a rocket ship cake my mom made for me when I was a kid. I’ll have to ask her if she still has pictures of that one.
I LOVE Cakewrecks. Happy Falker Saltersday.
Awesome cake. Gabby’s 3 yo is begging for a “lobot” cake for his birthday next week. I may just have to steal your design and make him one!
For anyone interested:
- the body and head are made from two 9 x 9 inch cakes, with the head piece trimmed down to make it smaller and the extra pieces used for the feet.
- the claws are cupcakes, cut into Pac-Man-like shapes.
- the legs, arms, neck and ears are Cakesters, frosted, as are the large eyes (cut in half).
- a package of rainbow Twizzlers and some Dots were used for the trimmings.
- The rivets are edible silver balls.
Pretty simple, really.
I make cakes for my kids every birthday, so about 11 so far. My wife loves that I handle it because she hates baking anything but cookies. I love figuring out how to get the pieces together.
The last two are an Indiana Jones cake (complete with Rice Krispy boulder) and Mack from Cars, and a Monkey Cake.
That may be the coolest cake ever.
I’m horrible at cake decorating, but it doesn’t stop me from trying:
Susan,
Your cake is awesome in its own way.
jjohnson, those cakes are awesome.
That robot looks delicious. What flavor of cake was under the frosting?
Geoff, it was a banana cake.
All hail Susan’s scary demon cake!
Susan, Holy mother of pearl, I cannot even believe that cake!
Marilyn Manson’s mother is crying herself to sleep right now thinking about it. It’s Oztastic! What is the name of the ungodly color scheme? Did it spontaneously burst into flames when you tried to light the candles? Did it come with a Ronnie James Dio figurine for the top? Did it play power chords when you cut into it?
Please, I must know more about this masterpiece of mayhem!
I love the horns at the bottom Susan.
jjohnsen, your cakes are like masterpieces.
I wish I could have done a robot cake when my son was little and used to pretend for days that he was a robot. Now he’s a metalhead and gets a lame heavy metal cake. I totally should’ve put a Dave Mustaine doll on top of it.
What’s funny is this pic gets almost more hits than any other of my Flickr photos. People must be disappointed when they land on it!
Here’s my wife’s most recent effort. She’s pretty good at cake decorating. She did her sister’s wedding cake recently. She made this Mario birthday cake in the midst of a Super Mario Galaxy phase in our house.
I thought about Summer first thing, Tom. She’s really good with cakes.
Love the Mario cake. Very nice.
Maybe he’s a metalhead because he didn’t get a robot cake?
Although, on second thought I’m pretty sure that BTD Greg’s cake is Iron Man.
How did you get the icing that colour of grey? I love this cake! Very creative and super cute
Shannon, getting the icing a good shade of gray was the hardest part, I thought. I first added some black decorating gel to the white frosting, but it turned out the gel wasn’t a true black and mixed with white it looked like a really unappetizing purple…so I mixed in some green and a little red until it looked more greyish (I remembered red + green = gray from playing with watercolors).
There is probably a better/easier way to get gray frosting, but we made the cake late at night so we used what we had.
I just made my own version of this cake – it’s awesome! Thanks for the inspiration!
