Movie Review: Year One

Supergenius note: I was supposed to go to this screening, but work intervened. I got a friend to go instead. His review is below. Sounds like I dodged a bullet.

Year One was a whimsical farce of ancient history and biblical lore.

It is the story of two bravely bumbling cave men played by Jack Black and Michael Cera who embark on a epic Lord-of-the-Rings-esque expedition in search of glory and easy women. Along the way they cavort with renown characters such as Cain and Abel, Abraham, and the king of Sodom while perverting everything they touch into sexual innuendos.

The movie made a good showing, but its humor was a bit hit and miss as demonstrated by the sporadic spurts of laughter that would come from random members of the audience and it lacked the heavy gut-wrenching audience-encompassing laughs that have become the signature of the much coveted and highly lucrative comedy-blockbuster formula.

The movie is true to its two main actors, so if you are a hard core fan of Black or Cera would probably enjoy Year One. I would recommend catching this flick at a Saturday morning matinee with your nephew and save your primetime viewing for the far more hilarious The Hangover.

  1. Mel Brooks did it better!

Instead of even thinking about seeing Year One at a matinee, wait a few months and rent it from Redbox (if there is a machine near your locale).

  2. I don’t think the jokes in the trailers are all that funny. That’s never a good sign.

  3. Yeah, this seemed kind of forgettable. The kind of film that’s been made many times before.

  4. I can’t help myself, Black and Cera always make me laugh.
