Rescue Me

Give it up for the best and most authentic show about firefighters since…well, ever.

This show succeeds on every level.  It’s drop dead funny (especially this season–recapturing the humor of the first season (which was over-the-top-awesome if you haven’t seen it) and ditching some of the darkness of the last couple seasons; it’s emotionally charged, dealing straight up and unfliching with the issues experienced by New York firemen and their families who survived 9/11; and it’s convincing.  You get the feeling that Leary and his merry band of nutjobs have actually been among the FDNY.  This is an amazing, wonderful, dramatic, funny, touching and above all, unpredictable show.  And it has the best theme song on TV.

  1. I want to like this show, but every time I’ve tried, it won’t let me.

I haven’t tried very much though.

  2. What is it that won’t let you, Susan? I know some people can’t get past the profanity, and some people object to the subject matter of the firehouse discussions. What is it for you? Have you watched any of the episodes so far this season?

  3. I don’t remember, but if there’s swearing, that’ll do it.

  4. Yeah, there’s a lot of swearing, and it’s definitely a guys show in many ways. It’s trying to be an authentic picture of FDNY firefighters and you can’t really do that without swearing pretty constantly. I like that it doesn’t make these guys look like heroes. They’re very normal guys that do very normal things most of the time but are not at all normal when the bell rings. I suspect that it will appeal to very few women, but if you want to know what makes these kind of guys tick, it’s a vey good show for that.

  5. The only thing I know about this show is that it uses a lot of Afghan Whigs and Twilight Singers music (which is a plus). I’ve heard lots of good things about this show but the Denis Leary thing is kinda tough for me to get past.

  6. How are you liking Michael J. Fox this season? I was intrigued by that storyline when I read about it.

  7. Ditto for me Susan.

Anyone remember Emergency from the early 70′s? Rampart, we have a problem. Loved watched reruns of that show as a kid.

  8. I tire of the ‘nuts & sluts’ aspect of the show, every woman is crazy and wants to bang Denis Leary. I think the creative process goes something like this; Denis says, “then we’ll have this french chick, right, and get this, she wants to bang me Tommy.” Season 1 was the best, I almost gave up last season, but it’s on the DVR still. They keep getting farther and farther from the firehouse story lines of the first year and more into a male soap opera.

  9. I remember Emergency. Loved that show.

I actually like Dennis Leary, which is why I want to like this show.

Anyone watch Boomtown? I *loved* that show. Canceled after only a season or two, of course.

  10. Yeah, I like Leary too. But he’s so rarely in shows I like. I did like that cop “comedy” he was in a few years back on ABC. Forget the name.

  11. I like Dennis, he’s hilarious. Darin, there is some of that going on, but this season so far seems a lot more like season one. I’m not sure the french chick is going to turn out to be that into Tommy, btw.

  12. Husband is a fan, and I guess I am too though I feel like I hate to admit it and want to claim I only like to watch it in a trainwreck kind of way (it’s pretty raunchy). Maybe making you feel that way is part of the charm. Anyway the first season was great, after that husband kept watching but I was pretty uninterested what parts I did catch (a lot of lame subplots and raunch starting to feel forced instead of authentic and funny). This season has been great so far. When it’s good, it seamlessly blends the tragic and serious with the crude and silly, and the portrayal of guys being guys is hilarious.

  13. I love it, and you’re right, the opening credits are awesome. Like many FX shows it does run a bit raunchy, but I like many great HBO shows, I don’t a little raunchiness to go with actual mature sorylines.

Anyone watch Boomtown? I *loved* that show. Canceled after only a season or two, of course.

It was very cool. I don’t remember specifics, but it seems like it had a different feel than the other 50 cop shows on television right now.

Yeah, I like Leary too. But he’s so rarely in shows I like. I did like that cop “comedy” he was in a few years back on ABC. Forget the name.

The Job. It was fantastic, and had a bunch of great actors.
