BSG 3.03.2009 – “Islanded in a Stream of Stars.”

- I didn’t know “Island” was a verb.  But I checked the OED (Oxford English Dictionary), and it’s been a verb since at least 1661.

- All the recent BSG news you could ever want is here.  Tons and tons of links at that link.  Tons.  So many, I see no need for me to list any other links today.

-After tonight, we just have the three part finale.  Part one is next week.  The week after will have “The Last Frakkin’ Special” and then broadcast all three parts in a row.

Spoilers below the fold.

*  Resolved: Starbuck is not very good at giving motivational speeches.

*  The Colony’s only been mentioned in passing once before.  I wonder why it wasn’t mentioned before this season – the Humans occasionally mention Caprica or the colonies.  It seems odd the Cylons would never talk about their home world.  It also seems like that would have been the logical place for the Ressurection Hub in the first place.  It just feels like the show’s creators are furiously making stuff up at the last minute in an attempt to make it all make sense – which it never all will.  When they decided to go the final five route (which was a late decision as interviews have shown), they created too many problems.  At least their damage control so far has been better than expected.

*  “You’re a pip”? – What?  Tigh sang with Gladys Knight? (Yes, I know, it’s a reference to his rank pips, but it really doesn’t work as dialog – that line made my wife burst out laughing).

*  It’s the kind and wise Ellen this week.  Perhaps it will last for the rest of the series.

*  Looks like a prediction Supergenius made last week turned out to be dead on accurate.  Don’t let it go to your head.

*  Caprica Six was right – Baltar hasn’t changed.

*  I guess they never upgraded the Colony, given the old school raiders they have there.

*  My wife comments that the music during the final scene with Tigh and Adama sounds a lot like the music played during the sinking of the Titanic in that James Cameron film.

*  My wife’s review:  “Better than last week’s show. They really need to get moving and speed things up.  They haven’t revealed much, and they haven’t really done much the last few episodes.  It’s like they can’t do more than one important thing each episode.”

*  My review:  Better than last week.  Some developments, though I felt by the end of the episode that not a lot happened.  Still, this episode did hold out some hope, which is an improvement over the rabid nihilism the series has recently wallowed in.

  1. Told you so!!!

Haven’t watched the ep yet. But c’mon folks, have some faith in ol’ SG.

  2. It just feels like the show’s creators are furiously making stuff up at the last minute in an attempt to make it all make sense – which it never all will.

    Amen

  3. I still don’t know what Starbuck 2.0 is.

And, I can’t stand another episode of Adama looking up at the ship!!!!! WE GET IT! HE LOVES HER! GREAT!

  4. Hehe. Yeah, and it seems like the Adama smashing crap as he privately cries his eyes out has been happening every other episode or so lately…

  5. Starbuck is a zombie. She just hasn’t developed the taste for human flesh yet.

  6. I enjoyed it. It’s easy to mock what they are trying to do, but the parallels between caring for a dying loved one and Adama’s behavior towards the Galactica have been handled well. Imagine agreeing to euthanize a spouse – such is what Adama is feeling.

Starbuck? She is a resurrected angel. Didn’t you listen to Baltar?

  7. It was a pretty interesting episode. I liked the bit when Sam grabbed Starbuck’s arm. It looks like Galactica is on the verge of being resurrected as a cylon as well.

  8. Well, I thought that Anders said that Starbuck is going to be the hamburger of death or something…

  9. HARBINGER!

  10. oops…my bad.

I guess I was hungry while I watched the episode…

  11. I’m not liking where all this is going. Ugh. The rebellion was well done. But overall one just can’t help but remember the first two seasons.

  12. It was kind of a lame episode. Yes, I get it. The ship has metal cancer. Roslin has chick cancer. Adama is emotional over the prospect of losing both. Just seems like a lot of filler these last few episodes when there is so much yet to resolve.

Clearly now the finale will be battle with Cavil, Hera rescue, Galactica sacrificed, Roslin dies, we find out what Starbuck is, survivors find Earth and settle down.

Hopefully there is a good twist in there somewhere to keep it interesting.

  13. Hayes -

    the twists will be these:

They don’t find Earth. They return to Caprica. We never do find out what Starbuck is. Roslin is cured. Hera disappears. No more mysteries are answered. What we’ve seen is all we’re gonna get on that front. It’s all character arcs from here on out.

Those are my predictions. They’re likely wrong, but I’m afraid they may be fairly accurate.

  14. I HOPE that they are wrong. That would just, well, frakking blow.

But, seeing how Moore was so enamored with the Soprano’s series finale, I am afraid that you might not be too far off.

  15. Hera is rescued, Roslin dies, we find out what Starbuck is, Gallactica survives and is similarly reborn, and the search for a home continues.

But we never find out where Head Six and Head Baltar came from. (I thought Head Baltar was a great idea when they first showed it, but there has been absolutely no follow up on it.)

  16. Anyone notice BSG follows the Alien films closely? The first two are awesome, each with a different feel. The third was highly flawed and disappointing that seemed to forget what made the first two great. But it still had some fantastic moments. The fourth was even worse and you felt like they were grasping to make things work. Sound like each BSG season?

  17. Hmmm.

I kinda liked the fourth Alien Movie.

But, yeah, it didn’t hold a candle to how awesome the first two were. So your analogy still works.

  18. Ivan, some liked the 4th season of BSG much better than the 3rd. (I liked about half of the 3rd season and thought the first four episodes on New Caprica were fantastic despite the overly strong Iraq parallels)

  19. Isnt Starbuck a hybrid? Her dad would be daniel no? The creative sensitive one that Cavil disposed of.

  20. Clark -

I agree that, despite the overly strong (as well as contradictory and incoherent) Iraq parallels, the New Caprica episodes were very strong and amazingly epic.

But it seems like, after that, the creators had no real idea what to do. So we get Baltar hanging around on a base ship doing nothing (except for hot Cylon three ways with Six and Xena) for several episodes. If Cavil had a plan, he sure didn’t do much with it for most of season three.

  21. J. Madson -

Hybrids are the Cylons that are plugged into Base stars and control them while spouting prophecy. Starbuck is not a Hybrid in the sense the series uses the term.

If you mean a cross between Cylon and Human – very possibly.
