Who Should I Cheer For In Tomorrow’s Game?

I always cheer for chaos in the BCS system, which means I cheer for the underdog in most cases. I like it when #1 teams lose and mid-major teams rise in the ranks. Anything to make BCS commissioners uncomfortable. But I can’t figure out whether a Florida win would be a better indication of the screwed-up nature of the system or if that honor goes to Oklahoma.

I like the idea of Urban Meyer trying to defend his national championship this year to the Ute argument (because he was in the opposite position just a few years ago). I also like the “national champion” to have lost to a mediocre team (Ole Miss).

So I think I’m leaning Florida. Any reason to root for Oklahoma?

  1. An Oklahoma loss screws Texas too, since Texas beat Oklahoma. Plus, there are rumors that if Meyer wins, he will arrange an “exhibition game” with his old team. We won’t have any chance of that with an Oklahoma win. Cheer for Florida.

  2. Oklahoma is the clear choice for chaos. If they win, they will be national champion with 1 loss. The likely #2 team (Texas) will also have 1 loss – but with a head to head victory over Oklahoma!

  3. I hate Florida. I hate Florida more than I hate Michigan (and I’m from Columbus, Ohio, if that tells you how much I hate Florida.) So because I don’t give a $4l+ about Utah, I am rooting for Oklahoma.

  4. Yeah, I think you are right Rusty. A Florida win is worse for the BCS.

If Oklahoma wins (and they have a good chance of dong that) they will have a strong case for being the #1 because their only loss will have been at Texas in a close game. Florida has a MUCH uglier loss at home to unranked Ole Miss.

Actually, the real thing to pull for as a BCS hater is for enough AP voters putting Utah at #1 to give us a split champion in the polls. That would irk the BCS cartel to no end.

  5. Um, Ole Miss wasn’t bad this year. And…they beat the team (Texas Tech) that beat the team (Texas) that beat Oklahoma.

Seriously though, they went 9-4 with wins at FLorida, at LSU, and vs. Texas Tech. They’re four losses came by a combined 19 points and they’ll probably end up in the top 15 in the season’s final poll.

Anyway, comparing losses is just silly.

  6. You’re right Tim — Mississippi ended up being better than expected so the loss to them ended up looking less and less ugly over the course of the season. But still I think Utah has a somewhat stronger case with AP voters if Florida wins. And if the goal is to stick it to the BCS, having the AP crown a non-automatic-qualifying team the national champ is the ticket.

  7. Boomer Sooner!

  8. As long as it makes the BCS look bad, I don’t care who wins.

  9. Cheer for Oklahoma if you want chaos. If Florida wins, there’s no question about them being number one. But if Oklahoma wins, there sure will be lots of questions.

  10. I’ll cheer for Oklahoma if only to make their playing BYU next year all the sweeter if we win.

  11. Dan,
    What’s your reasoning?

    Clark,
    Is that game confirmed?

  12. BYU in the season opener vs. Oklahoma on Sept 5th. I just found out about it too. They also play Florida State.

  13. Feel free to throw rocks at me, but shouldn’t “Whom” be the first word of the thread title?

    Yes, I’m a nerd.

  14. And the Oklahoma game is going to be in the new $1 Billion Dallas Cowboys stadium.

  15. Rusty,

Oklahoma is in the title game on a technicality, a fifth-round tie breaker where the computer sent them in over the other team. To have them win on that is just a shame. Florida, on the other hand, soundly defeated the number one team in the nation at the time, Alabama. If Florida were to win, then there won’t be any question as to them being the best team in the nation. Even Utah wouldn’t have much to say. But if Florida loses, then Utah has a real good argument to make. They also defeated the number one team in the nation, very soundly too.

I don’t know if I follow my own logic. It’s just too confusing, the whole situation. I don’t know how many times one can scream for a playoff to clarify things. Because, let me tell you, no one questions that the New York Giants were the champions last year, even though New England finished the regular season with a perfect record.

  16. Mostly you should root for lots of turnovers, penalties, and punts by both teams.

  17. If Florida were to win, then there won’t be any question as to them being the best team in the nation. Even Utah wouldn’t have much to say.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Utah has a good case against anyone who is not undefeated. Utah has a great case against Florida, because their schedule was no tougher than Utah’s and they have one loss, which came against a team ranked lower than three teams Utah beat.

  18. shouldn’t “Whom” be the first word of the thread title?

No. The first word should be “For” as in, “For Whom The Bell Tolls.”

  19. Thee, MQC. After that remark, it tolls for thee.

  20. Yeah, I wanted to rewrite the whole thing to begin with “For whom” but I held back. I’m ashamed.
