Well,
Leonardo does machines, but Michaeangelo is a party dude. I think I’ll choose neither and go with Rafael, he’s cool but crude.
Here is my understanding of one aspect that might be helpful in the comparison.
Michelangelo felt that sculpture was the ultimate form of art, superior to painting, because it existed in 3 dimensions. My understanding is that Michelangelo openly expressed contempt for Da Vinci, because Da Vinci wasn’t as comfortable with sculpting as he was with painting.
It should be added that despite his view of painting as an inferior art form, Michelangelo still mastered fresco painting (a very difficult process) in a very short period of time.
Yes, but Da Vinci was so forward thinking in his inventions, so imaginative.
I wasn’t expressing a preference, just something I heard/read about the two of them. My understanding is that they met once and Michelangelo said something that was quite derisive about Da Vinci. I haven’t come across a quotation yet.
Dude, Leonardo leads. Donatello does machines.
Yea, I went with Da Vinci because he was more than an artist. Michaelangelo might have been 3-D in his craft, but he was 2-D in his thinking.
Don’t forget that Michelangelo was an architect as well as a sculptor and painter.
I’m trying to decide if Da Vinci should in any way be held responsible for a horrible movie and even worse book that has his name in the title.
matt b-
I stand corrected.
All I know is that they are all turtles and I can’t tell who has what weapon or why.
Da Vinci is not a turtle. Leonardo is. And for what it’s worth, Donatello and Raphael were both great artists and influential but neither holds a candle to the impact and importance of Michaelangelo and Da Vinci.
Michaelangelo. The Pieta, David, The Sistine Chapel totally kick ass on the Last Supper, the Mona Lisa and the Madonna of the Rocks.
Da Vinci all the way. Dude, he cut up corpses for research! Now that’s dedication to your art.
DaVinci.
That unfortunate book aside, I mean, come on- the helicopter, for heaven’s sake.
Michelangelo dissected corpses as well – so on that factor, we have a tie.
And it’s not like Da Vinci actually built a helicopter.
I voted for Mickey A. because of the aforementioned sculptures and such. The pieta rules.
Disecting corpses was actually rather common (per se) for the Masters. Figures.
Michaelangelo may have been derisive to Da Vinci when they met, but Da Vinci dissected him later.
