007: Excited?
So I have to ask. Are you excited about next week’s A Quantum of Solace? I was, although my excitement has been tempered somewhat by the lukewarm reviews that have come out. (Basically saying there’s almost too much action and not enough charm) There’s also a worry that they are doing too much Bourne aping.
I’m still hoping though. Plus, I think that the last film had Bond as a closed almost robotic personality who opened up and has now locked down again. So they may explore that personality. If true, then we shouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t quite as charming. That’ll be part III.
I do hope it’s a good film though and not merely a set of implausible set pieces. That last film, Casino Royale, was arguably one of the best Bond films ever. And the only one in years that had a good soundtrack. (I’m trying to remember which one before had a good one – For Your Eyes Only?)
Now I know some of you doubt me since I think Goldfinger is the weakest of the original Bond films. C’est la vie I guess. I just love where they went with Casino Royal and hope this one fulfills my expectations despite the reviews.

It’s landed like a damp squib over here in Blighty.
I too loved Casino Royale. I think there was great chemistry between Bond and Vesper, and the story focused more on the characters than on the action. I look forward to Quantum, but I’ve tempered my views about it also from the trailer.
I like Casino Royale because it was more like a Bourne movie than a Bond movie. So if it’s more of the same, I’m ok with that. We already have a babysitter lined up and our tickets purchased.
I don’t like the theme song for this new Bond movie (for one thing, it’s trying to hard to be different). We’ll see how the rest of soundtrack fares.
I’m excited for Twilight.
My favorite film critic Mark Kermode was very disappointed. Every other review I’ve heard has followed suit. I’ll still go see it, but I’m almost expecting to be let down.
we already have a sitter and our tickets to the cinerama for friday. which, to be honest, even if the film isn’t THAT fantastic, we’ll still enjoy a night out together. {and i’ll enjoy some daniel craig eye candy} p.s. i, too, thought casino royale was the best bond film to date.
We’ll wait for the DVD.
They have so screwed up the bond franchise I don’t know if I’ll ever be excited about a new bond film again. I know Casino Royale was the best one in a long time, but I’ve still got a bad taste in my mouth from the 6 or 8 before that.
Going in with reasonable expectations probably is helpful. Look at how many didn’t like Batman. I’ve often wondered how much of that was due to the hype.
Wow, Jacob, that many? None of the Brosnan films made you happy? What was the last good one?
Ronan, what’s a damp squib? It sounds fairly negative, but I can’t tell for sure if it’s good or bad.
I liked Goldeneye although it had flaws. But it was better than any of the post-Connery films. (IMO) The series quickly went downhill. I halfway wonder if they shouldn’t have kept the same director for Quantum of Solace. Direction is actually a big problem with many Bond films.
Squibs are the small explosive devices designed to simulate bullets. When damp they don’t go off.
Clark, I’m excited. For me, the “reformed” Bond is more entertaining – they’ve dropped a lot of things that bugged me before (sequences with Q, cheesy humor, over the top gadgetry, corny villains, etc.), and at least for Casino, the story was more engaging than before. Hopefully Quantum doesn’t suck. I’m ditching work Friday afternoon to go see it.
I’m very excited for it. I loved the last one.
I’m always excited for Bond. Call me a sucker.
Sure, I’m excited. I’ll be seeing it–but then, I see almost everything.
MCQ,
A wet firework.
Oh, well that’s better than what I was imagining. Has it been released over there yet?
MCQ, it was released in the UK last week, and in the US this Friday.
