McDonald’s or Burger King?

  1. Neither, but Burger King really sucks whereas McD’s only sucks.

  2. That’s odd. I don’t know if the food is different on each country, but I’m in Mexico and here Burguer King tastes better, hands down. I was sure the poll was going to reflect that, but so far it doesn’t.

  3. Marco, in Australia I remember Burger King (it’s called Hungry Jacks there) tasted much better than the U.S. version. I prefer Burger King over McDonalds anyway, the smoky grill flavor hides the taste of fake meat better than McDonalds.

  4. Mcdonald’s has the best fries in the business, and better soft-serve cones. And wo to those who defy Le Big Mac.

  5. Burger King has a better burger.

  6. I concur with Gabby’s assessment.

The “real flame-broiled flavor” tastes fake to me. Also, those Burger King commercials creep me out.

  7. I eat at McDonald’s 5X for every time I eat at BK. Having said that, I’ll take BK’s menu over McDonald’s, except for the fries.

I love BK’s chicken sandwich, for some reason. Pretty generic, but tastes great.

  8. I’ll take the McMuffin over the Croissanwich, BK’s onion rings over McDonald’s fries, but the Big Mac breaks the tie over BK’s Whopper.

BK has been boxed-in a little marketing-wise. They can’t play the cheap/fast card as McDonalds owns that market by far. But Wendy’s and now Hardees/Carl’s Jr. have capitalized on the quality market. Notice BK’s commercials are currently going after Wendy’s and not McD’s. I find this interesting.

  9. I’ve long hated McDonald’s but they’ve really reformed their menu. Their new chicken sandwiches are surprisingly good. Plus Burger King has been continuing a steady decline from the early 90′s when they were actually pretty good.

  10. BTW – I much prefer Burger King french fries. Plus McDonald’s soaks their fries in milk which means my kids, with bad milk allergies, can’t eat them.

  11. Haven’t eaten at McDonald’s in years. Sooooo gross.

Burger King has better fries. The one near where I used to work had a really good Cesar salad but I haven’t seen it at any other BKs.

  12. McDonald’s is a blight upon the face of the land, and a forerunner of nearly everything bad about the fast-food industry. I wish it would die.

    BK when forced.

  13. My kids don’t like BK chicken nuggets, prefering McDonald’s or chic-fil-a. They do like BK’s play ground. I used to prefer BK, but now their meat on a regular cheeseburger tastes like cardboard, which is frustrating because I think it used to be better. I don’t buy whoppers or quarter pounders, just the generic $.89 cheeseburgers, and the mcdonald’s version wins be a greasy landslide.

  14. I don’t eat meat, so neither is really an option for me.

  15. Both have vegetarian options. Burger King sells Garden Burgers.

  16. Actually, I only tried In-N-Out burger this past summer, and I’m converted. But between the two, I’ll take Burger King. Their Angus burger with grilled onions is pretty decent and the meat tastes real.

  17. BK wins. The Whopper is good eat’n. And the creepy commercials are awesome (especially when compared to McDonald’s phony urban/hip/happy dreck).

  18. I don’t eat at either one, but I did by several hundred shares of McDonalds a few years back. Last week notwithstanding, it has been a great investment.

  19. The BBQ Bacon Tendercrisp (BK) is very possibly the best fast food sandwich available for purchase.

  20. In n Out is so far above regular fast food it’s ridiculous.

  21. With the exception of the recent Star Wars toys at McD’s, BK tends to have much better kid’s toys. Also the burgers are tolerable. Frankly I’d rather not eat at either one of them.

  22. In my experience, McDonald’s has better kids’ toys than BK–with the exception of the BK Star Wars toys a couple years back.

I prefer BK’s food overall, particularly the burgers, but there’s no chicken nugget like a Chicken McNugget.

  23. And of course we’d rather not eat at either of them, but that isn’t the question, is it?

  24. Speaking of McD’s what ever happened to those awesome commercials of my youth when there wasn’t just an annoyingly political correct Ronald McDonald but a whole McDonald’s community: Mayor McCheese, Big Mac the police chief, the hamburgler (who originally was scary looking), the purple guy Grimace who had a shake addiction, and so forth. My secret joy is that in my very young life I had all the McDonald’s action figures and the McDonald’s playset.

In those days Burger King only had these cheap paper crowns that somehow were always stacked beside the garbage containers.

  25. BTW – Wendy’s new chicken BBQ sandwich is pretty good.

  26. In-N-Out is hands down the best burger- in every way. Carls Jr/Hardees for fast food chains, and if I have to pick between two evils, BK wins. McDonalds is just disgusting.

  27. McDonald’s has the best fountain Diet Coke. That seals the deal for me.

  28. Clark, my son has life-threatening dairy allergies and he can eat the fries at either restaurant without problems.

I go with Burger King, but only with a pistol to my head. Both are nasty.

  29. David, look at the ingredients McDonalds lists. It has in bold “contains wheat and milk.”

  30. First, Chick Fil A over everyone else.

Mc’D's fries are much better, but the Angus is the better burger. BK is going to have places where you can buy Beer. Seriously, BEER. Advantage: The King

  31. Shake Shack, although the grass-fed beef burgers I had on the street in DUMBO the other night were even better (and they sold the best hot dogs I’ve ever tasted).

  32. Clark, that’s really curious. I wonder if their definition of “milk” excludes the protein my son is allergic to: cassein. Or maybe it’s the fact that it’s been “hydrolyzed” that un-milk-ifies it for him.

McD’s fries always seem too salty for me. And BK’s fries seem hollow. I usually go onion rings or cheese curds (it’s a Wisconsin thing).

In-and-Out is over-rated. I grew up in Northern Cali and ate there often, and there’s nothing special about them taste-wise, methinks. Decent fries though.

I’m all about Hardee’s/Carls Jr. and Culver’s if it has to be fast food. Otherwise, I love trying burgers from random “hole-in-the-wall” places – those are usually the best.

Beer in a fast food restaurant? Dude all they need now is strippers and it’s safe to say that utopia/nirvana/elsyian fields/heaven/insert your paradise of choice has arrived.

  33. Ok, a Carls just opened yesterday down the street from us, and I don’t know if it’s just because they’re new, but I just ate the best burger I’ve had in a loooooooong time.

I still love IN-N-OUT though, David J. Their fixins are so fresh…

  34. In and Out is nothing like what it used to be. David, it’s the old Southern Cal In-n-Outs that are/were special.

(Now wondering if there is any subject on which I won’t yammer on about the good old days.)

While I will get an unholy craving for McDonald’s now and again, I never feel that for BK. BK wins, however, as the king is out of his mind, but at least I don’t suspect him to be a pedophile like Ronald M. And he isn’t a clown, big plus. On the other hand, BK has nothing as astonishing as that big purple milk shake monster.

  35. Sam B,
Come on, that’s not fair comparing BK/McD’s to Danny Meyer. Shake Shack beats out all burgers anywhere. (where in DUMBO did you get that burger?)

    Tracy,
Where (down the street)? And if you’re talking Spokane burgers you have to throw in Zips, Ron’s and Dick’s.

  36. David, I don’t know. But both my kids are allergic to the milk protein and get pretty sick if they get it in even trace amounts. So we typically just err on the side of paranoia. Interesting I’m not the only one. So I assume you are, like me, resigned to very boring food.

  37. Rusty,
Fair enough. And I can’t remember exactly: I think it was on the corner of Front Street and Water Street. It wasn’t so much a restaurant as an independent Trader Joe’s with a gas grill. And I honestly don’t know if they usually sell burgers–we were in the neighborhood for the DUMBO Arts Festival. But if they usually have that grill out, get a burger or a hot dog. Seriously delicious (and moreso for us apartment dwellers that don’t have a place to barbeque).

  38. The real question is which would you find less creepy – waking up to find the King or Ronald in your bed?

  39. Between those 2 choices, McDonald’s wins out west, BK in the east.

In the west (AZ mostly), McD’s has Dr. Pepper, better fries and burgers. Hands down better breakfast on every front. (OJ, bacon/sausage, biscuit)

In the east (NJ mostly), only BK has Dr. Pepper, and the MacDonalds employees don’t understand the meaning of “well-done” when talking about bacon.

I haven’t had either in a month and don’t plan on going back too frequently.

  40. Rusty- corner of Evergreen and Sprague where the old Skippers was… and Dicks, with the onion strings, is awesome.

  41. Clark, our food at home royally SUCKS. Without cheeses or butter how the heck is anything supposed to taste good? My poor son has to be excused or bring something on his own at a pizza party (usually PB&J and some sorbet). He’s only 6, but he’s taking it better than we thought he could. He’s a tough little guy. And he’ll pipe up and tell an adult to keep stuff away too. He carries epi-pens in his backpack n stuff. There’s a LOT of dairy out there – even sliced turkey has whey in it. Curiously, Oreos do NOT have any dairy (which only goes to show how unhealthy they are!).

  42. What’s worse is not only is my son allergic to milk protein (which is in almost everything) he’s also allergic to pepper and nuts. Admittedly with a more minor allergy, but still. What little the milk didn’t kill the peppers usually do.

Pizza parties are the worst. We just had one parent having a party at Chuck E Cheese’s and couldn’t figure out why we couldn’t just bring a sandwich for Conner. Like that would work.

We do give oreos occasionally. However while he isn’t allergic to sugar too much definitely affects him in a big negative way.

  43. But, come on, everybody’s going to McDonald’s this month to win a MILLION DOLLARS, right?

I eat at McD’s more often only because the drive thru service is so much better, but it’s hard to beat a $1 Whopper Jr. And that decadent Oreo sundae shake with the enormous straw. *drool*

  44. Their are several proteins found in milk, and your individual child may be allergic to one or all of them. Given the possible consequences the trial & error approach to discovering what your child may tolerate is not a good idea. Best to avoid them all.

That said, most (but not all) children tend to outgrow milk allergies. As such there are very few adults with a milk allergy. Please note that lactose intolerance is not an allergy.

Also of interest, due to a FDA loophole non-dairy whipped topping can and often does contain milk protein.

More of concern generally would be the nut allergy. They tend to stick around for life and are much more responsible for the severest of reactions. And remember, just because an allergic reaction has always been mild (or follows a pattern), that is no guaruntee for further reactions. Any nut allergic person should always carry an epi-pen with them at all times, and have one in the car, at their classroom, in their parents possession (purse), and anywhere else they may spend time regularly. All adults who spend time with the child should be trained on how to use it as well.

I am probably preaching to the choir and boring everyone else, but it isn’t often I get to use my very limited knowledge.

  45. A lot of non-dairy stuff contains cassein I’ve found.

  46. I don’t like the fake flame flavor of BK’s sandwiches. McDonald’s hamburgers are gross, but not as gross as BK’s for that reason.

McDonald’s has better fries. Also, McDonald’s Asian Chicken salad is actually really good. So I voted for McDonald’s.

  47. Clark is right – even lactose-free foods have cassein in them. We’re a soy family. TStevens, my son’s allergy has only worsened with time. Even topical contact will cause major hives-looking rashes that would need immediate medical attention, not to mention the nasty cough he gets after that. And a room with steamed milk in it for him would be akin to a gas chamber for us. The doctors all said it would pass in time but it hasn’t. Oh well. Like I said, he’s a trooper.

The only things McD’s has going for it in my opinion is its global ubiquity, prices, and their coffee.

  48. David

Quite right. Nothing is 100% and your individual results may vary. If your son is past the age of 5 or 6 then it is a good shot he will keep it.

Fortunately, while not in the Federal Register yet, Allergen labeling (direct clear labeling) is well on its way for the big nine. Most responsible companies are already on board.

  49. Detroit-style Coney Island hot dogs FTW!
