SYTYCD: Jessica Out, Comfort back in

Apparently, Jessica is injured (broken ribs) and is now out and they have brought back Comfort, the girl who was kicked off last week.

Questions:  Is this right?  Is this fair?  Was Jessica dropped by Will?  Did he do it on purpose?  What’s the deal?  Your thoughts?

  1. Well, for the time being, he has to have a partner, and a person really can’t dance with broken ribs. It makes sense to bring back the last girl to be kicked off. Are you suggesting the broken ribs are a cover up? I’m sure Will wouldn’t have enough influence to get her kicked off.

  2. Oh dear. And he made Jessica look bad! Poor Comfort.

  3. When did he drop her? I’m trying to remember. It’s sad for Jessica and if true kind of makes the slamming she got that much more annoying. Of course Comfort is injured as well.

Note everyone gets new partners this week.

  4. Apparently all will be revealed Wednesday night, but I smell a conspiracy.

  5. Oh, I heard this today. I am happy, as you all know, I am not a Jessica fan; I think I almost assume that Comfort will go home on Thursday.

  6. So, will Comfort or Jessica be part of the tour? (Not that I really liked either one, but I’d rather see Jessica if I do see the tour.)

  7. #3 said it, that everyone gets new partners this week. So if Will had anything to do with it, his timing sure is bad. I mean, why would he do this when she was about to be somebody else’s problem anyway?

So I don’t really see the conspiracy. The producers were free to keep Comfort and send Jessica home last Thursday, if that’s what they wanted.

  8. I talked to my wife about this and she remembers Will dropper her but covering it pretty well. It’s pretty sad if that’s the case as I think she deserves to be in the top 10 even if she would probably leave Thursday anyway.

  9. I’m new to commenting here, but this is such an immensely important topic!

Isn’t it quite likely that Jessica broke her ribs during practice for tonight’s performance? i.e., her new partner dropped her?

  10. So interesting. Kinda sad that I have to watch Comfort get kicked off twice, though! (Sad for me – not for her, by the way)

  11. So tonight was a bit of a surprise. I’d be quite surprised if Kherington (too lazy to check spelling) isn’t out tomorrow. Two very weak partnering dances and a lackluster solo. Plus Comfort did quite well in one dance and had an adequate solo. It is quite surprising this year how much better the men are than the women though.

Will and Katee lucked out for the best partnering, although that’ll only last a week. But both proved they are very strong and likely to be in the final four.

Gev surprised me dancing much better than I expected although that may have had something to do with his partner.

Mark was disappointing although I kind of knew that was coming.

I’m not sure what guy will be out tomorrow although part of me suspects it will be Mark. It’s Mark or Gev as the other guys are just so strong.

Unless there is a major shakeup it’ll be Katee and Chealse in the final four with it being up in the air as to which guy won’t make the final four. Will is there for sure and I think it’ll be Joshua as he’s been remarkably strong. But Twitch may make a play. But he’s been consistently weak in most ballroom.

  12. Man. I loved Joshua’s Rumba. So good. And both of Will & Katee’s dances.

Kherington & Mark sucked it up all over the place, now didn’t they?

  13. Yeah. You could see it in their eyes that they both knew they were going home. It’s too bad that Chelsea didn’t get that country 2 step as I know she’d have rocked it. (And probably done it at the speed I’m sure the choreographers would have preferred)

  14. I was actually wincing at how slow that 2 step was! It was so very, very painful to watch. They definitely did the worst this week.

  15. I think they have enough of a fan base to pull through, though.

I loved that Katee chose Maxwell’s cover of Kate Bush for her solo—that scores huge points with me.

I also loved the dance to David Archuleta’s song (Gabby’s puking I’m sure) and I really loved the song used for the futuristic hip hop routine. Chris Brown–anyone know anything about him?

  16. I wished she had chosen the Kate Bush original, but I love the song, so I won’t complain.

I loved the dance so much, I’ll forgive the Archuleta oversight!

  17. I know nothing about Chris Brown except that they use him on SYTYCD A LOT. I think he performed on the show 2 seasons ago.

I loved the Pas de deux; it was just fabulous. I really loved how Katee just looked so tortured by the mistake afterwards and I loved how Nigel chose to comment on it. They are probably the two best dancers this season (even those of you who are Jessica lovers have to admit she never could have pulled that off). If you compare their jazz routine from last night against Mark and Kherington’s 2 step, it really highlights the differences in their skill levels. Yes, that was a very fast and difficult 2 step routine, but Kherington was just flopping her arms about–a more skilled dancer would have made it look better even if they weren’t terribly confident in it. All of their movements were small and timid, compared to Will and Katee–everything they do is strong and extended and purposeful and large but never over done.

My one complaint about Katee is that her solos are so boring; she falls into the same trap as most contemporary dancers. There are certain movements that are linked to contemporary and set it apart from jazz, and all their solos are just a string of these. So boring! Will is better at putting together a performance that is unlike that of all the other dancers.

Loved Chelsea last night, loved the contemporary routine and thought Gev really stepped it up.

I think Comfort and Mark will go home tonight, unless Comforts fans really rally around her, then it will be Courtney.

  18. I really liked Courtney last night.

I think Twitch does some of the best solos. His actually seem planned out, with a purpose. Everyone else’s just seem more “here’s me doing what I always do.”

  19. I agree Susan; so many of the hip hop dancers rely on doing the tricks that they know will wow us because the average person can’t do them, but Twitch has an artistry to his choreography that most of them lack that really takes his solos to a whole other level.

Two more comments from last night– what was up with Lil C? He was seriously bugging me.

and I was sure lovin’ me some Otis.

  20. I thought Chelsea’s solo last night was a tad weaker than I’d have liked. Plus other than the music she seemed to be borrowing a lot from a solo Benji’s cousin did a couple of years ago. (Forget her name – it was a pretty great routine though)

I agree Susan that some people’s solos are getting awfully repetitive. (I thought that about Comfort truth be told)

  21. What was bothering you about Lil C? I liked him, except for how he kept leaning into the mic.

    Benji’s cousin is Heidi.

  22. I felt like he had valid things to say, and if you listened carefully, it was clear he knows more about dance than just hip hop, but he was using so many words that didn’t make any sense in the context that he was using them. Instead of making him sound intelligent, which I assume was his intent, it made it very hard to understand what he was really trying to say.

  23. He’s a tad over metaphoric and sometimes gets lost in what he’s trying to say. But I like him a whole lot more than some other judges.

I was surprised last night that Gev was eliminated. It was obvious Wednesday night that it was going to be Gev or Mark. But Mark’s dancing was definitely subpar this week and his solos were a bit underwhelming.

  24. I was a little surprised that it was Gev and not Mark, but it matters little; Mark will go home next week–not because he is a bad dancer. He and Gev are both great, but they are both far below the other remaining boys.

So glad it was Kherington that went home after her little hissy fit. I wonder how much her obvious seething attitude on Wednesday night contributed especially compared to Comfort’s “I’m just glad to be here let’s dance and have some fun” attitude.

  25. Yeah, my wife thought it was her age and immaturity showing. Except that several of the girls are the same age and there have been lots of 18 year olds in years past as well.

  26. Lil’C: “Every opportunity is one step closer to perpetual evolution.”

    Huh?

  27. My favorite was: “It’s very difficult to locate the avenue of gain when you’re being chauffeured by loss.”

I think everything he says makes eventual sense, it’s just so odd that you have to think about it for a while.

  28. I liked his crazy lines.

  29. MCQ: In general I agree with your claim in #27, but I’ve been thinking about the quote in #26 and I’m still perplexed. Care to translate?

  30. I think the idea was that as we fail we develop the character slowly where we can be self-creating and self-developing rather than being developed largely from without. He’s got the romantic notion of the ideal soul of an artist and thinks that we can reach it via failures.

At least that’s how I understood him at the time. I just thought he was saying it in a clumsy fashion.

Of course all the romantic notions about the ideal artist really bug me but I’ll not walk down that line. I think several of the judges have talked about those sorts of things is very self-defeating ways.
