iPhone Hell
So I was travelling to Seattle over the weekend. I stopped at a half dozen AT&T stores. Couldn’t get an iPhone. They sold out early in the morning. No one yet has an iPhone anywhere. They are now saying there will be a wait of 10 – 21 days to get an iPhone. What!?!?!
Anyone manage to get one?
What’s really annoying is that according to TUOW analysts are giving Apple top notch marks for how it performed the rollout. [Strong language deleted] What on earth are these analysts smoking? I’ve heard of folks who were in line Thursday night who still haven’t got an iPhone.

Let me tell you about iPhone hell. My uncle gave me one when his company switched to Blackberry. I use Verizon through work so I was just using it as an iPod touch. It’s a kick butt iPod, great for surfing the web, watching movies, etc. Whenever I turn it on, it warns me I don’t have a SIM card in, then happily lets me continue using my ipod.
Then this update comes along. I didn’t plan on using the app store, but figured I may as well give it a shot. Finish the update and the phone is locked. Without a SIM card I can no longer use it for anything other than making 911 calls. No more ipod, no more movies, no word web browser. This phone that my uncle paid for completely, and is still paying for an AT&T plan, is now worthless to me. There’s a way to restore the old version, but you can only perform that version through iTunes, and it won’t recognize it in iTunes until I have a SIM card.
Worse yet, if I sell it on Ebay it’s going up against a newer version that is also $200 cheaper than what this one cost.
Now that’s hell. Hmmm. Clark, how’d you like to make your hell a little less worse with a cheap 1.0 iPhone?
As an iPhone user, I should chime in. I bought an older iPhone back in February. I was excited that my iPhone could also get the new 2.0 software. I tried to get it on Friday, but it wasn’t available. It was on Saturday. I installed the new software, backed up all my info, and everything works fine. I’ve not had any problem yet with my phone. Everything works as it is supposed to. I’m probably not going to buy the new one because I already invested in the older one at the higher price, but at some point in the future, I’ll shift over. Probably when the next generation comes out.
we bought our 1g’s on launch day and we’re still in love with them, even though we paid three times what they go for now. we have 2.0 running on them now, no snags. we’ll upgrade eventually, but probably not until these die their final death.
so, forget 3g, someone talk apps to me! i didn’t bother to check any out till today and now my head is swimming! what is a must-have?

Yeah, people have been griping about that being horribly inaccurate as well. (Your best bet is to call) One problem is that people have reserved iPhones so as soon as they come in stock they are already sold.
I got in line at about 6 am on Friday. I was 45th in line, they had 50 iPhones at the ATT store I was at. I had mine in hand at about noon. I was highly annoyed that they were so incredibly slow. Other than that I has been great. My wife, who thought I was crazy, wants one now.
I should note the problems with the iPhone, just to make this a regular iPhone post.
o still no cut and paste
o no universal “reply to” setting in the mail app
o no voice memo syncing with your computer
o no email search (this will be painful for me)
o email UI a pain with lots of folders/emails
o no push updating of calenders
o sms is $10 a month extra on your data plan
o no mms (that’s what a lot of camera phones use to share photos)
o no turn by turn gps. (only a top down view)
OK, I’m still waiting for mine. But for all you others here’s a cool tip for free push email.
OK, this alone would have pushed me over the edge for getting an iPhone.
the remote app is pretty sweet. What I’m hoping for is an SSH client so I can reboot servers while on vacation.

Yeah, I can now control the iTunes from my phone if I wanted to. That’s awesome!
What’s cooler isn’t just controlling iTunes. It’s being able to type everything into the aTV from my iPhone. While I rarely use YouTube it sure would be nice to be able to type searches in. (Hopefully this week for me once my shipment arrives)
BTW – the iPhone 2.0 software has been jailbroken. It’s suppose to be public this week. This means that some applications that aren’t really possible via the app store will be available. With ssh on the iPhone (which is included when you jailbreak it) you can then use terminal emulators like mobileterminal.
Alternatively, if you don’t mind installing it on your server, there is webshell.
Some of this stuff may be making it to the app store. But I suspect stuff that never would, such as tethering your computer to the phone, will come with jailbreaking.
