90210 Returns; or, Signs of the Apocalypse

Sickening.  Sickening and maddening.

Especially sad for those fans of The Wire among us.

About Brad

I grew up (debatable verbiage) in Utah. I attended BYU, where I earned a degree in Russian, followed by a stint at the University of Utah where I earned bachelor's and master's degrees in US History. I currently reside with my family (wife, three sons, and two daughters) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I am a PhD candidate in Sociocultural Anthropology. In addition to husband, father, Mormon, and academic, my other salient identities include washed-up musician, amateur chef, Hollywood liberal, inveterate book buyer, loyal Utah Jazz fan, wannabe screenwriter, and Capricorn.

  1. They’re only giving the people what they want.

This could be the best worst show on TV since the original. Right up my alley!

  2. This could be the best worst show on TV since the original

    Very well put, Susan.

  3. CW is going down fast. They have, I believe, only a single real hit (Smallville) and that’s dying. Even their top shows aren’t that popular. Compare this to how Fox got onto the scene and is now one of the more popular networks. They need to get some quality programming soon.

  4. I don’t completely buy that Fox’s rise was due to quality programming. Sure they had the Simpsons and X-Files, but this is the network that gave us Celebrity Boxing and So You Want To Marry A Millionaire. Their continued success relies on trash TV like Moment of Truth. If anything they find a quicker, surer path to the lowest common denominator than their competitors.

  5. Fox was always a mix of trash and good stuff.

The point about the CW isn’t whether they have trash. Rather it’s whether they have trash people want to watch. Outside of that model show, I don’t think they do. It’s more of the same and the trash they do have is also more or less on lots of other networks.

Fox was cagey about doing sensational tabloid like trash that would run for only six months.

Don’t get me wrong, that was the part of Fox I hated. I think Fox didn’t come into their own until they started having shows like 24 on. When they grew up.

  6. Doesn’t the CW have Gossip Girl? I heard that show is some sort of smash hit.

  7. Super-G:

    Blair or Serena?

  8. Blair!!

  9. No, way. Serena has better taste in shoes. Or something like that. I’ve actually never seen it. I just read the New York Magazine article about it.

Okay, I lie. I watched it for about 5 minutes once — it didn’t really appeal to me. I’m more Gilmore Girls/Angel/Buffy/Smallville (or at least the first two seasons of Smallville) than Dawson’s Creek/Gossip Girl/One Tree Hill.

  10. a random John

I’m holding out for the return of Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.

  11. What does this have to do with The Wire? The Wire didn’t get cancelled, right? It just ended.

  12. I keep wondering of Max Headroom is still as cool as I thought it was when I was 10. But I haven’t yet been brave enough to test that. Some childhood memories should remain coated with the vaseline lens of nostalgia.

  13. What does this have to do with The Wire? The Wire didn’t get cancelled, right? It just ended.

One of the actors in the new 90210 (Tristan Wilds, the guy whose face you can see in the Youtube still up above) was a main character on the last two seasons of The Wire.

I’ll definitely be checking this out, especially since I heard David Simon and Ed Burns are going to be writing some of the episodes.

  14. especially since I heard David Simon and Ed Burns are going to be writing some of the episodes.

It’s bad enough that the show’s over, Brian. Don’t mock my pain.

  15. I saw the British pilot of Max Headroom a few years back. While the pace is too slow it actually holds up quite well. I don’t know about the American version.

  16. Gossip Girl is actually pretty good. Chuck Bass is the best (kinda, sorta) redeemed villain to come along in a TV show in quite a while. And SG is right, Blair is way hotter than Serena.
