According to dialidol.com, it wasn’t even close. I guess this was probably disappointing to a lot of people in Utah. I’ve never seen an episode of American Idol, which means that I’m out of touch with America. I should probably repent, but it seems silly at this point — ratings are falling, right, which means that everyone else is losing interest, so it’s the wrong time for me to bother checking it out.
I’m surprised because a “rocker” (Susan, I’ll use that term in quotes around you!) won it. I think it’s premature to say that Cook will spoil the “rock” genre because A) he’s only 1 artist, and B) we haven’t heard any material that he’s written on his own. But either way, I’m interested to see what he does with his career now.
It seems to me that Underwood is the only American Idol champion that has catapulted herself beyond the cheesy tour that follows the show. Where’s Hicks? Where’s Studdard? Fantasia is a joke (her performance last week made me want to watch Sanjaya), and I have a feeling that Sparks’ career will be ephemeral. Hopefully Cook can do something with himself beyond winning the big one.
RT, ratings may be dropping, but the votes cast were the most ever by far, so I don’t think interest in idol is dying. I haven’t watched idol much in the past, but in terms of talent level, my impression is that this season was the best in years.
As a Utahn, I can tell you that I was rooting for Cook, not Archuleta, mostly because I just like Cook’s style of music better. I think Archuleta is a great singer and should have a great career, he’s just not my type of performer.
MCQ, number of votes cast is something like an indicator of intensity of interest on the part of core fans, while ratings are an indicator of breadth of interest. So a record number of votes may indicate that core fans are more involved than ever, but dropping ratings and failing careers for former Idol winners indicates that the broader societal moment may be passing.
Parenthetically, record numbers of votes might just mean that more people used Idol auto-dialing software this year than in the past…
Are you surprised?
Yeah, totally. But I didn’t really care either way who won. You?
I wasn’t surprised but I cheat by looking at dialidol.com.
And I didn’t care who won after that finale. The last hour was pretty darn cool.
“I didn’t really care either way who won.”
That about sums it up, I’m afraid.

Kelly Clarkson has had a good career so far.
I think David C won because of Daughtry’s success last year.

I actually really like Kelly Clarkson. Best Idol ever.
I hope they make a “From David To David” movie.
