Albums Long Out You Just Discovered
OK. New list. Albums that have been out for some time that you just now discovered and love.
Here’s mine.
Eddie Vedder – Into the Wild Soundtrack
What a great album. Yeah there are echoes of Pearl Jam but it’s really its own thing. I’ve been listening to this a lot recently. I don’t even recall hearing any of the songs on the radio. I’d put this up with some of the top by Pearl Jam.
David Gilmour – On An Island
An other fantastic album. I think this one’s been out for quite a few years. I noticed it while flipping channels and a live performance was going on of it. It’s not perfect. But there are some really great tracks on the album. Quite different from his normal Floyd stuff. A bit more folk and jazz inspiration behind it although there are a few more Floydish tracks.
Jack Johnson – Sing-a-longs and Lullabies
I’d skipped this one since it was kids music. But I picked it up for my son who loves Curious George. (A lot of the songs were in the movie) It really is a great album. Even songs that I wouldn’t consider listening to that are clearly aimed at kids are really well done musically. This is probably my second most listened to album after Vedder’s right now.

I just bought Styx greatest hits this week, because I was trying to explain Styx to my son who is being forced to play Journey by his guitar teacher. His pristine mind is being slowly warped as we speak.
I adore that David Gilmour album.
On An Island isn’t that old—2006.
The Datsuns – self-titled (2002): Good garage rock kind of stuff. Like the Hellacopters.
Mostly I’ve been listening to 2007 releases that I didn’t catch when they first came out.

Good call on the Vedder album. If you’ve seen the film you’ll know that each song opens a new chapter in Chris’s life, or, in the case of Hard Sun, the end of it.

ingrid michaelson’s girls and boys album. i can’t stop listening to it. i’ll like one song for a while and then switch to a different song and fall in love with that one and now i’ve just fallen in love with every single song. it’s just a really well done album.

The Lemonheads new album (self-titled).
The album that recently knocked me over (in a good way) is Raising Sand by Robert Plant and Allison Krauss. It hasn’t really been out very long at all, but it’s the best thing I’ve heard in a long time.
I’ve been listening to a little X, Los Angeles. Also, I didn’t know that Neal Diamond has been recording new music. The 12 Songs album, released a couple years ago, is really pretty dang good.
Gotta say that I’m really tired of Jack Johnson.

I’d rank Vedder’s Into The Wild soundtrack ahead of all Pearl Jam albums. But it isn’t that old.
There are many bands I’ve known about since the beginning, and listened to some of their songs, but never bought an album for whatever reason. They are bands I told myself I’d check out some day…
For example, I’ve only just started getting into Belle & Sebastian and Wilco in the past couple of years. I have now worked my way through both bands’ entire catalogue.
Some other bands I got into late, but knew about since the beginning: Eels, Nada Surf, Dandy Warhols, BJM, etc.
Well by old I didn’t mean decades. Just something that’s been out a few years that you just discovered. All of mine are within 4 years.
Both Belle & Sebastian and Wilco are fantastic. One of the guys from Wilco has some Jazz albums I want to check out one of these days as well.
