  1. The Sword of a Thousand Truths from World of Warcraft.

That was the weapon Cartman got in the South Park episode Make Love, not Warcraft.

  2. Number one is the classic BFG from Doom. Huge omission, Rusty. Huge.

  3. I second comment #2. And standard-issue pistol from Halo? Seriously?

  4. Kickin’ It Old School version:

    1) Flamethrower – Rush’N Attack (aka Green Beret)
    2) Cruise Missile – Roadblasters
    3) Nunchuk – Bad Dudes
    4) Smart bomb – Defender (also Tempest)

    (also: Squall’s Gunblade from FF8)

  5. I also have to quibble with the choice of Bond games. The WORST!! Where’s Goldeneye, for crying out loud?? The Golden Gun from Goldeneye should be considered. Ridonkulous.

  6. I like the double fighters from Galaga, personally.

  7. That satellite blaster from Gears of War was way better than the chainsaw (which I rarely used)

Did you ever try to see how far through Halo you could get using only the pistol?

  8. William Morris

I’ll take the grenade from the original Castle Wolfenstein.

  9. Mark,
WoW is a culture, not a game, and it’s a culture that I have never been interested in. You may be right, but I’m not willing to invest the time to find out.

    SG,
I never got into Doom, I was more of a Wolfenstein guy. Again, you may be right, but I rarely played it. Also, it wasn’t a matter of (Bond) games, it was weapons. I agree that GoldenEye was by far the best of the series, but those other weapons beat out anything in GoldenEye. Yeah, the golden gun was good, but not as fun as the other two.

    Mephibosheth,
Have you ever played Halo? That pistol was incredible and something most people shunned for a bigger gun, even though it was better. I stand by my selection.

  10. And if anyone is wondering, the greatest game out right now is Call of Duty 4. Hands down.

  11. You guys are scaring me. Put down your idiotic weapons and pick up a guitar. Rock Band and Guitar Hero rule!

  12. Do you guys have anger issues?

  13. Actually I also like that gun in F.E.A.R. that shoots fire/lightening. Cool gun.

  14. All great video game weapons.

I have one that is way under the radar though. The lap top gun in “Perfect Dark” was awesome.

  15. Rusty, I can understand the attraction. Sure it only took about two head shots from the pistol to finish someone off, and you could squeeze the trigger faster than the shotgun, and when you pistol-whipped someone your guy flipped it around a few times. I just don’t see how it hasn’t been surpassed.

  16. What about the Holy Hand Grenade from Worms 2? (Or the banana bomb, for that matter.) Sure, it’s a bit more cartoony, but man, it did some serious damage.

  17. I have to agree with Rusty’s #2.

In the interest of self promotion, I’m going to have to link to my own Laser Missile Command, which features the most entertaining weapon I’ve seen used in a long time. And yes, you can download it.

  18. #1 weapon…

The drumsticks I use on Rock Band

  19. Nice choices. The pistol in Halo is overpowered, but only in a skilled hand. More casual Halo players never find out how mighty it is.

    Biggest oversights from recent games:
    Gravity Gun, Half-Life 2
    and of course
Portal Gun! (from Portal) I stand by it being a weapon, but your brains are the bullets.

  20. Geoff, good call. Have you downloaded the Boston package yet? Seriously awesome, but I defy anyone to perform it on expert (especially as singer).

  21. There news that a Boston package exists for Rock Band is almost enough to make me go and buy a PS3 and the game…

  22. My son has been begging me for PS3 just for Rock Bank. Hmmm – I’m might just have a weak moment this weekend….. I love the drums, hmmm… I think its purchase time.

  23. No way, the BFG from Quake II is the best game weapon ever.

And don’t forget C&C’s ion cannon.

  24. How about the cranial bore from Turok? Man, that thing ruled.

  25. Bad grammer in last post, should read “I” and “it’s”. Is it Friday yet?

  26. The Metallica package for Rock Band also has some sweet vintage tunes on it, MCQ. Anything off “Justice” is a welcome addition to the game.

Another great weapon was the “S” gun in Contra. (Did it stand for “spread”?). That thing rocked, especially when used in conjunction with the NES Advantage joystick.

And any game with a close-range shotgun (Resident Evil 4, Call of Duty, Bond, etc.).

  27. Why yes MCQ, we do have the Boston package. It does indeed rule. (It is actually my neighbor’s system but we spend a lot of time together doing “band practice” as families).

The best thing about the drums on that game is that you can actually learn how to drum using it (whereas the bass and guitar don’t teach you to actually play bass or guitar.)

PS — Let me also second the “S” on Contra as a cool weapon. I also aways loved those games with cumulative weapons…

  28. Maybe you guys didn’t read my comment about the Cranial Bore. It is a homing missile that latches onto a dinosaur’s head, DRILLS INTO IT, and then EXPLODES. HOLY CRAP.

  29. I’ve never played the vocal part on RB – does it notice when you drop an octive? Because that’s the only way I think I could ever match Brad Delp’s vocals (RIP Brad, we miss you).

  30. SG, is that in the new Turok on the PS3? I don’t remember it on the old one.

  31. I heard Turok wasn’t that good.

  32. David, it was in Turok on the N64, that’s the only place I’ve played it. Clark, it wasn’t that great a game — it was OK — but it was spectacularly and creatively violent.

  33. Oh, I agree, the idea behind Turok is cheesy and lame (after all, dinosaurs are wildlife, just ancient) but that weapon sounds wicked cool.

SG, if you want creative violence, check out the new Ninja Gaiden on the PS3. It will blow you away.

Does Sub-Zero’s decapitation-with-spinal-cord-still-intact fatality count as a weapon?

  34. oh yeah, how about Scorpion’s corded javelin for a great weapon? “Get over here!”

  35. arJ, Abby, don’t think about it, just do it. You will thank me later, and so will your kids, though when your kids beat you on “More Than A Feeling” you may want to blow your brains out.

Geoff: I disagree somewhat. Drumming on rock band is more like real drumming than the guitar playing is, but there are transferable skills on both. We play real bass, guitars and drums at my house and, believe me, playing Rock band is beneficial for all the instruments. Of course, vocalists benefit the most.

David: I’m not a singer, but I suspect the answer is that you can get away with being a full octave off as long as you hit the right notes in that octave. This allows you to not only sing Boston and Rush, but also allows for males to sing along with the Pretenders, Garbage, Hole, Heart, etc.

  36. MCQ – I have a game system on hold and will pick it up in the morning. I expect to immortalized my rock star status by conquering “More Than A Feeling” – no loaded weapons will be needed. Maybe….

  37. MCQ,

We have an arrangement in my house. Rather than a complete video game ban (which someone has senselessly pushed for) we currently allow video games that have been produced in house. When the kids are old enough to do so they have to help in the production process or no games.

  38. So I guess that means no Rock Band?

  39. I have not written a Rock Band clone yet. However I would be more or less free to buy the equipment and then write the software.

  40. arJ, you have the only home I know where a ban on all video games not produced in the home does not equal a ban on all video games. Good luck with your cloning. I think you should use real instruments instead of the controllers. Then I’ll buy your game.

  41. I know I’m not the best at HALO, but my favorite weapon is the rocket launcher. In fact, that’s always my favorite weapon. And Needlers are pretty cool if you can get them to work right.
