Idol: Rank ‘Em 1-to-11

1) David Archuleta
2) Syesha Mercado
3) Carly Smithson
4) David Cook
5) Michael Johns
6) Brooke White
7) Ramiele Malubay
8 ) Jason Castro
9) Kristy Lee Cook
10) Chikezie
11) Amanda Overmyer

There were no stand-outs last night. David Arch won by default, he was good but not amazing. Syesha was great, though a little too sappy. Carly, David Cook and Michael Johns were all okay and Brooke was embarrassing, though her vocals weren’t that bad. Ramiele was alright. Jason Castro was too goofy to take seriously. Kristy Lee Cook wasn’t horrible, though I expect her to be the next to go. I’m done with Chikezie and Skunkie did the same old shtick.

  1. Yep even I liked Carly this week. Her lower register is gorgeous. Archuleta redeemed himself well. Many of the others went to the same well one time too many I thought.

  2. -Brooke needs to learn when to shut up. She’s great and all, and my wife will continue to vote for her no matter what, but come on – but after your song is over, try to keep your extreme social backwardness in check.
-The groomed-from-birth American Idol cyborg Davey Archuleta and his mad scientist stage dad take this round.
-Johns continues to take unwarranted flak from the judges. -Jason Castro wears some interesting jeans.
-Carly Hennessy comically begs for sympathy votes, because we all know that this industry has just been so hard on her…
-Kristy Lee Cook reminds Simon that she can “blow him out of his socks.” We all know she wants to break through in the business, but that’s just too far.
-Don’t forget to vote for Amanda!

  3. I would put Carly much lower than No. 3. Her muzak-tortured blackbird had me reaching for my shotgun.

And has anyone else noticed that Jason Castro is strangely Jar-Jar-Binks like?

  4. David Archuleta: Definitely the best singer.

    Syesha Mercado: OK, not great.

    Carly Smithson: OK, not great.

David Cook: My husband said, “I hate that guy.” But what he really meant was, “I hate and despise that guy.”

Michael Johns: Always picking the wrong songs. Don’t ever do that to “Day In the Life” again.

Brooke White: I’m gonna buy her song on iTunes. I love that song and I love her voice.

Ramiele Malubay: Glad to see her liven it up a bit.

Jason Castro: Horrible song choice. What was he thinking? I guess one of the problems with the Beatles is a lot of the youngsters aren’t very familiar with them.

Kristy Lee Cook: I can’t even remember what song she did. I remember it being one I really like, except when she sang it.

    Chikezie: OK, not great.

    Amanda Overmyer: OK, not great.

I just wasn’t feeling it this week. I couldn’t believe these song choices.

No one did “Help”? Jason Castro, I’m looking at you. (He should have done it like U2.)

Songs they could have done that would’ve been awesome:

I Saw Her Standing There (Johns or Cook)
    And I Love Her
    Can’t Buy Me Love
    We Can Work It Out

Or maybe they just would’ve ruined anything they sang.

  5. I was severely bummed that Kristy Cook chose “Hide Your Love Away”. I was hoping one of the actually good singers would choose that classic — the Aussie could have done well with it for instance. (And to make things worse she admitted to never have heard it before this week!)

  6. Last night was horrible. I blame AI for completely ruining the Beatles at this point.

  7. I’m floored by how little these folks know of the Beatles. And then to admit it. Sad.

  8. Yes, shameful. My husband couldn’t understand why they’d do the Beatles two weeks in a row until I mentioned iTunes is going to be selling the Beatles catalogue soon.

  9. I hate the Beatles. Think they suck. This did not help that.

    1. Brooke White (but, then, that’s just because I like her and can fast forward over her rambling, not because I think she did her best)

2-5. (the group I still hold out some hope for) Michael Johns, David Cook, Carly, Jason

6-9. (or the group I just fast forward over completely because I hate them all)
    David A, Syesha, Chikezie, Ramiele

10-11. (or the are they still trying to sing?! group)
    Amanda and Kristy

However, they ALL sucked it up last night, so it should just be a straight 10-10 list. I haven’t fast forwarded so much Idol since last years finale…

My prediction is Kristy Lee’s squinty self will be leaving us…

  10. Can you explain why you hate the Beatles, gabby? I can (sort of) understand not liking them, if you say you prefer the Stones.

  11. It’s nothing specific. I’ve just never liked them. I don’t think they wrote / sang particularly great music and now are WAY overrated due to some nostalgia / martyrdom of Lennon feelings. I feel the same about Elvis. If you like them, great, but if you don’t, it shouldn’t stop the world, you know?

  12. I only half listen to this while I’m doing other stuff, but I blame the judges. The contestants oversing the way they do because they think it will win them points. If Paul McCartney were to do one of his own songs in his own style, I think the feedback he would get would be something along the lines of “I just wasn’t feeling it, dude. Too laid back.” The expectation seems to be that these guys will do the Beatles better than the Beatles did, and that’s just not going to happen.

But I do think that if Amanda is going to insist on being who she is, she should have just done Helter Skelter and told the judges where to stick it.

  13. I never listen to the Beatles (or haven’t since my teenage John Lennon/Yoko Ono/Everly Brothers/Doors phase) because you don’t have to listen to them. They’re everywhere all the time. I would say they’re overplayed but I don’t necessarily think they are. It just seems weird to say they suck (which is different than saying you don’t like them) when their catalogue is so big and diverse. And they were an influence on everything that’s existed since they started.

It’s like saying Jimi Hendrix wasn’t a good guitarist.

  14. (And Neil Finn is most definitely influenced by the Beatles! :)

  15. Ok, suck was probably harsh (although I don’t thnk they sing well AT ALL). How about I personally think they suck? Ha! And yes. They are everywhere and I can’t get rid of them. They are like nasty bugs (hee!) that won’t go away when their time is over.

Neil Finn is more than influenced by them. He has stated his love and adoration of the Beatles on more than a million occasions. I’ve decided to forgive him his one flaw…It’s very big of me!

  16. LOL.

It’s actually the fact they don’t sing all that well that partially accounts for their influence. How many artists have you heard say they would never have picked up a guitar if it weren’t for the Beatles? They all figured if the Beatles could do it, so could they.

  17. They are like nasty bugs (hee!) that won’t go away when their time is over.

Sort of like Mozart and Beethoven…

  18. Yup. Just like ‘em.

  19. I love the Beatles. Best band of all time.

American Idol is not treating the Beatles well and it’s horrifying to see how little the performers know about this music.

I thought Simon’s comment about Kristy Lee Cook singing “musical wallpaper” was right on target. She makes me think of those blonde robot women in the Austin Powers movie. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

David Archuleta’s “Long and Winding Road” bored me. But that’s not a Beatles song I’m into as much. I wasn’t quite sure why the judges were so hyper-positive about that performance.

When Brooke White started singing “Here Comes the Sun” in that yellow dress, I kept thinking “Here Comes Big Bird …”

I liked the Day Tripper performance – even though I bagged on that guy the previous week.

  20. It’s also horrifying to see how little the judges know about the music.

  21. YES!!! VICTORY!!! Skunkie is gone. We thank thee, America, for being so sensible.

Is Kristy Lee Cook this year’s Sanjaya, just prettier?

  22. Makes you wonder if votefortheworst.com is losing some steam. I bet they’ll back Kristy next.

#20: I was just happy the judges knew and referenced Eva Cassidy and Jeff Buckley. I’m blown away when Simon sometimes doesn’t know a song the contestants are singing.

  23. Votefortheworst.com is basically a advertising site now. They probably lose 3/4 of their visitors because of the home page takeover from overstock.com.

  24. #20: Me too.

KLC is like Carmen Rasmussen. Can’t sing, is always bottom 3 but just keeps living somehow. Every season has one! I’m thinking they have to keep her alive for Dolly Parton week (oh, the horror…)

  25. Dolly Parton week? You’re kidding, right?

  26. That’s a train wreck waiting to happen! She’s actually written some terrific songs. You know someone will be unable to resist doing Whitney’s version of “I Will Always Love You.”

  27. I’m sure it’ll be wrapped nicely as merely ‘country week’ w/ Dolly as the mentor, but still. Dolly week will be must see TV. There is NO way that won’t be bad. (I’d pay to see what someone would do with 9 to 5, say…David Cook or Jason Castro. Absolutely pay.)

I’m sure Syesha (if she’s still there) will call dibs on “I Will Always Love You”.

However, I’m at a complete loss as to what the theme will be when Mariah Carey is the mentor of the week…

  28. I love that Seacrest said “Actress” when mentioning Mariah. Both my wife and I laughed out loud.
