One part of the book that was left out of the film was the Sheriff’s confession of a cowardly act when he was a soldier in the war. I think leaving that out was an interesting choice.

I’m still not sure about No Country for Old Men. After seeing it, I read the book, then went back and saw it again. I liked the film both more and less after reading the book.

I think the film was a little plot-heavy and didn’t focus enough on Sheriff Bell, who is essentially the protagonist but didn’t really come into the film in a meaningful sense until the end.

So they start in a few minutes. I’m not watching. I’m putting Flags of Our Fathers on in one of the last HD-DVDs to come from Netflix. I’m sure someone else will write up the festivities.

I should note we went and saw Juno last night. I loved it and hope it does very well.

As incredibly lame as the Star Wars prequels are, they don’t hold a candle to “Titanic” with respect to a wholly depraved understanding of the human condition on the part of the creators.

Shakespeare in Love was very, very well written. It definitely deserved the Best Screenplay award. It certainly didn’t deserve the Best Picture award.

I have to confess that even though I’m a huge Tom Stoppard fan I’ve never seen Shakespeare in Love. I really need to. I did hear that the Paltrow award was undeserved. Perhaps not Marisa Tomei underserved, but undeserved still.

Clark,

I think Titanic is on a much higher level of quality than the Star Wars prequels. I think cinematography was vastly superior. Costume design. Heck, screenplay. Acting. In all ways, except special effects, Titanic was far superior to the Star Wars prequels. I don’t think Titanic deserved to be nominated because of its financial success. I think it merited the nominations on its own. Do I think it was the best picture of 1997? Not at all. Both LA Confidential and Truman Show were superior. But that’s just my opinion.
