Heroes recap: "Lizards"
Filling this in as we go. Meh. Previously on Heroes, nothing much really happened.
Peter’s getting the Flashdance treatment, with torture; I am really enjoying this as he gets beat. REALLY enjoying this. One of the guys from Star Trek: Enterprise is helping. Good for him.
Claire helps her mom cook, by plunging her hand into some hot water. Then she complains about having to lay low. Grow up, Claire. Seriously. Her dad is pretty nice about being a regular schmoe, though. Claire goes off to school in her new Nissan, while HRG sees that Sulu is dead. “I knew this would happen,” he mutters. HRG explains that Isaac predicted Sulu would die, and that there are seven more paintings of Isaac’s to find.
NYC Crime Scene. Matt the Cop is checking in to Sulu’s death, and is going to investigate Ando. Mama Petrelli’s fingerprint was on the photo. Ando explains the DNA logo to Matt the Cop.
Japan. Hiro’s jokin’ around trying to set things right in the past, hoping that his next leap will be the leap home. Sorry, couldn’t help. Hiro spends a lot of time drowning Sark, which is enjoyable, but then he decides to become Takezo Kensei himself and rides off, whooping. Cue credits!
CA. Claire is looking at a stupid science film about mutation and cellular regeneration. She tries to be a showoff in class but doesn’t get anywhere and looks stupid, except to stupid West who leers like a peeping tom.
Hartsdale, NY. Mohinder is meeting with Evil Ned, who uses a Mac. Evil Ned wants him to check out a new case of the mutant plague in Port-au-Prince, and to try not to get killed.
Guatemala. Maya and Alex seek refuge with childhood friends. Lots of Spanish gets spoken. Maya seems distraught about her brain-melting-blood-out-of-eyes skill. Wasn’t there an X-Files villain that could do that?
Cork-on-Fork. Some girl comes in to taunt Peter. Peter’s hair at least looks better. Apparently the Cork Gang is screwed if they don’t get the iPods they were expecting when they found Peter. Peter suspects he has talents of some sort. Kaitlin notices that Peter’s all healed up. Commercial!
Haiti. Mohinder is on the case! Lots of voodoo cliches to choose from, then Mohinder finds someone all sick in a bed: MuteHaitian!! Mohinder speaks passable French, but MuteHaitian doesn’t want a cure — he thinks this is God’s wrath. Mohinder convinces him quite easily to take it.
Guatemala. Some nosy woman who claims to be a healer wants to help Maya with her illness. The healer freaks out, saying that what she carries is “black enough to kill the Devil. You are cursed,” she says. Thanks, healer.
Japan. Love Interest is surrounded by a group of mean old samurai when Takezo/Hiro comes on the scene and brags. It’s pretty funny. Hiro uses his magic tricks to amuse the villagers, and the mean samurai run off. He rescues the little girl and all seems well. But no leap!
Cork-on-Fork. Peter keeps trying to get escape to no avail from the most obvious pub prison I’ve ever seen. He uses Slippery Man’s skills to slip out of his bonds, then FINALLY steals a shirt. As he’s about to sneak out, some men come in and try to harass Kaitlin — so Peter instead comes out and whoops ass, rather than save himself. Commercial!
CA. Stalker West tells Claire that he’s interested in genetics, too. He’s immensely creepy. S.W. tells Claire about Suresh’s book and offers to bring it over. Claire pretends to lay low, but returning to her car — finds it was stolen.
Japan. Takezo is talking to the girl and having some fun, but she thinks he’s the white guy. They talk about deer myths, and she falls in love. Ancient Japanese girls are easy. Hiro refuses to take off his mask, so she keeps thinking he’s Sark. Alas, poor Hiro, who also isn’t wearing his glasses and probably can’t see.
Haiti. MuteHaitian says his hands are now “steady as faith.” A lame debate about God ensues, and Mohinder notes that the virus is now more aggressive than ever. MuteHaitian erases his brain, awesomely. Best part of the ep. Evil Ned is the next person Mohinder sees, and he’s pissed.
Guatalmex. Alex and Maya are sneaking across the border — there’s a tunnel going into Mexico? — and it’s highly risky. The Policia Jeep arrives, separating Alex from Maya, AGAIN. Maya freaks out and can’t control her powers, and causes her guide to get the eyes-melting-brain-explosions disease. Alex is the only thing that can keep her in check. It’s nice and X-Filesy. Commercial.
Alex catches up with her, too late. WTF is that sludge crap coming out of her eyes, anyhow. Alex helps her tears turn normal, and his power takes the black sludge into himself. He saves her and the guide, who rightly points out that they are cursed devils and runs off.
CA Copyshop. Claire goes to work to tell her dad about the car. HRG is relieved that’s all that’s going on, but can’t believe she left it unlocked. She’s invulnerable, but incredibly stupid. Like seriously, she’s stupid. She wants to test her regeneration limits but cutting off her arm. I’d like to see that. HRG doesn’t, however, and talks sense into her, dangit. Claire is unconvinved.
NYC. Matt the Cop interviews Mama Petrelli, who is cold as ice. They think she might have killed Sulu. He asks her about the DNA sign, and reads her mind. She lawyers up, and screams inside her mind, “GET OUT OF MY HEAD!” It’s awesome. Nathan shows up to get her out of jail — but just then, the lights go out. Someone’s in the cell with her, scratching her up, and Nathan and Matt break into the room in time to save her, barely. Matt sees the picture of her with the logo. Commercial.
Cork-on-Fork. Kaitlin’s brother is mad that Peter saved his sister’s virtue, and tries to coerce Peter into doing a heist. He tells Peter his name, and holds up a box, containing everything they found on Peter — and offers it to him if he helps with the job.
Japan. Hiro returns the armor to Takezo at some bar, who is a big fat wanker about it. The swordsmith’s daughter returns to give the sword back to Takezo, and Takezo agrees to let Hiro come along and make him a hero if Hiro will use his skills to make him rich, like Han Solo. But as they walk out of the bar, the spurned samurai from before appear, and before Hiro can freeze time Takezo gets totally ARROW’ED and falls down deadish. Oh boy, as Sam would say. But then Takezo’s wounds heal, and he’s just fine, except that he’s freaking out about it.
NYC. Molly’s been drawing Sauron again. Mohinder returns home and sees this, as Matt the Cop sleeps at Molly’s side. HRG calls Mohinder and reports in; HRG is pleased as to a productive trip, and is confident that he’ll find the other paintings himself. HRG hands up and greets MuteHaitian.
CA. Mr. Muggles is watching a show on dogs with Claire. Light comedy ensues as Claire in turn reads up on lizards. She decides to test herself, but cutting off her pinkie toe with a pair of scissors. AWESOME. SNIP! It totally grows back, with cool animation, but Stalker West was peeping in her window again. What a wanker. Claire stumbles outside to find Suresh’s textbook.
At that point, my DVR stopped. Stupid Comcast. I damn thee to hell, Comcast.
Next week — who knows? Stupid DVR.

p.s. I think the stupid science teacher is Tim Kring.
p.p.s. this episode was lots better. Note the relative absence of child acting.
I flipped back and forth between The War and Heroes. The War won.
I thought I caught a glimpse of Sylar somewhere in this episode – maybe I’m imagining things.
You missed the previews for next week? Well, never fear, JessiNiki returns. As does Sylar.
Tracy, are you actually saying that you fought the War, and the War won?
This week was probably better than last week, but still pretty dull. Strangely, Mohinder’s scenes are some of the best, and HRG is great, as always.
I actually enjoyed Chuck more than I enjoyed Heroes this week. More Adam Baldwin = good Chuck.
Some of these characters have ‘weird’ powers. I’d definitely add the Guatemala/Hondurenan girl (and her brother) to that list. How would you describe that? …
My attempt: “the power to have black oily streamy tears that kill anyone in the vicinity” …
That’s just weird.
Maybe it would be explained as some kind of deadly biological toxin or something … but those who sense or experience what she does seem to think it’s a demonic curse.
I liked the Battle of 12 swords “Why does he keep saying his own name?”
I found myself surprised to be glad HRG and MuteHaitian were reunited.
Oh, and Peter’s haircut makes him look less like he wants to cut his wrists and more like a man. A great improvement.
Comcast cut off for me as well…no idea what happened after Claire got the book.
And, the episode was better than the season premiere, but I sure hope that there is some movement in the next 2 weeks…
It’s really not doing as well without the hook that the first half of last season had. In hindsight the whole “prophecy” thing was a great idea.
The secret bad guy in this season (which appears to be the future versions of Japanese Blond guy) isn’t nearly as compelling as the prophecy and Sylar last year.
Definitely a better episode than last week. I am growing increasingly skeptical of this show again though…
Chuck turned out pretty good again and I even checked out Journeyman this week. The best thing about that show is the soundtrack — they play songs from whatever year he is visiting in the background. For his brief 80s visit they were playing “The Ghost In You” by The Psychedelic Furs the whole time in the background. That ruled.
Yeah, I’m saying the Clash of worlds won.
Heroes better get better. I’m losing mumble mumble mumble…
Heroes is getting better, but it will get worse again: Jessiniki’s going to return, with Micah in tow.
I am surprised at all of you. You do remember last season, don’t you?
Collective amnesia?
I watched Heroes on DVD, and that was easier to filter through the bad episodes. So, I guess I suffer from this amnesia. Sylar/Peter and Hiro were the best parts of Season 1.
Soooo, does the Japanese Blond Guy is going to be a bad guy? WTF?
Maya and Alejandro are rapidly becoming this season’s Jessiniki. They’d better tie them into some other subplot soon.
LL, correct.
All I can say is I don’t care what superpower I’ve got. I’m not willingly cutting off my own toe.
I literally said, “No way,” outloud.
I thought it was cool when you saw the little chunk of claire-toe fly across the room. I was praying that they’d have Mr. Muggles gnaw on it.
I was wondering if she had super strength after that scene. Lopping a toe off with a regular old pair of scissors has to be pretty hard to actually pull off. She made it look easy!
Weren’t those old school sewing scissors? Those are actually pretty dangerous.
BTW – I agree with LL.
The problem is that in Heroes, unlike Lost, the characters aren’t really as compelling as the writers think they are. It works in Lost both because of the writing and because the flashbacks make us care. (Although a few characters had some pointless ones) In Heroes we simply relate to the characters in too short a time. Last year only Peter and Hiro were really that interesting along with HRG dude.
We have Dish with TiVo and it cut off in the same place. Have to set it up to record 2 minutes longer, which means bye-bye Journeyman (aka Quantum Leap Revisited)
Is it a plot problem that Claire winces while cutting off her toe, but doesn’t when she sticks her hand in boiling water?
I think the whole Peter-as-Bourne Identity thing could be interesting. He’d really be too powerful if he just kept absorbing people. (Don’t remember him picking up DL’s ability, though.)
Agreed about Mohinder’s scenes being some of the best. I was pretty happy about Claire chopping off digits, that always makes for great TV; I’m annoyed that nobody in her family thinks it’s normal to close blinds at night especially if you’re in hiding, though. I hate her voyeuristic love interest, too.
Biggest annoyance: Peter finally loses that awful haircut, and it shows up on Alejandro.
Yeah, the big problem with the show is how to deal with two ultra powerful characters: Peter and Hiro. Hiro they are leaving in the past with limited control of his powers. Peter they give amnesia.
BTW – I forgot to ask. His blue lightening bolt power. Did he get that last year or is that new?
We did see the lightning powers last year on the episode set in the DARKfuture. Not sure where he got it from. Maybe it is a controlled expression of radioactiveTeds power.
I have to say I am really disappointed with Maya and Alex(?) their powers suck. Isn’t Maya the only mutant that can’t control her power?
