Catching a Break
Cinematical has a good article about Nathan Fillion, the actor from Firefly, etc. that has had plenty of big breaks but still has not managed to really emerge as a popular figure. The article’s right on, I think, about Fillion but makes me wonder about great artists, bands, etc. that deserve success but never quite seem to find it. Tim Minear strikes me as such a guy, and of course any Canadian will tell you that The Tragically Hip should be big stars in the States as well. Who are the other masters who deserve recognition?

There’s a ton, IMO, within the heavy music realm. One band I was just thinking about yesterday was Floor. They sort of sound like Helmet, but they had two vocalists who would harmonize. They also didn’t have a bassist—the two vocalists both played guitar, and they down tuned certain strings. They were seriously awesome. They broke up after only one indie release. Makes me sad.
I always found the Hip overrated. I just never could get into them.
Andy Richter
Rob Thomas (the one not in Matchbox 20).
Brad Anderson.
Chris Eigeman.
Several Dallas bands/musicians you’ve probably never heard of).
Also Jim McAvoy.
Amen re: McAvoy!
McAvoy is still really young, though, isn’t he? And he’s already starred in several very well-received movies. He was in Narnia, for heck’s sake, with the biggest adult role, and has won several acting awards. He’s awesome, but I don’t think he’s a good example of someone who hasn’t received the attention he deserves.
I love, love, love Nathan Fillion. (sigh….) he is so my celebrity crush!
Neil Finn (at least in the US) is woefully underrated.
Scott Fisher. I’m hoping he breaks out big sometime soon. The same with Peter Stuart.
On the other hand, I think it’s safe to say that Nicole Ritchie will never be a success no matter how much spotlight she gets.
Are you sure about that SuperG? Perhaps there’s a Dame Judi Dench inside Ritchie crying to get out — but will only surface once she puts a decent amount of flesh on her bones.
I’ve always thought Sean Cassity could be the greatest American writer living today. It’s a shame he isn’t more acclaimed.
I’m also a big fan of Matt Besser from UCB. I’d like to make him a star somehow.
