Live: The Sunshine Underground
British (Leeds) indie-funk rockers, the Sunshine Underground, played Flex in Vienna on Monday. It was an outstanding gig. Brilliant, fun, bouncy.
The SU test:
Do you like indie-guitar stuff with cool dance beats?
Do you like bands that jump around the stage, clearly having a great time?
Do you like cheeky banter and English accents?
Do you like the idea of the Happy Mondays crossed with Blur and the Chemical Brothers?
Do you like funky bass and drum grooves overlaid with muffled-string rhythm and phlangey-guitar sounds?
Do you like songs to be accompanied by varieties of background industrial fuzz?
Good. Then file SU next to CSS and the Klaxons. Great live band. Really chippy stuff.

Great pic! Sounds fun. I rarely see bands that bounce around on stage.
Oh, I love bouncy bands!
Good stuff, Ronan. I like their sound, but the middle part of the first song seemed a little trite. Thanks for the review and the tip to be on the lookout for them. I really like their name, too! I can tell they are probably pretty great as a live/club band.
I forgot to mention that I went with my headlife brethren john f. and Peter.
Oh, and my mate Peter, who used to play in a Real Life Band, was impressed that they were very “tight.” So, bouncy and tight. Not easy to do. (SU won a Leeds-scene best live band award.)
Indeed, tight like a dish. And best served live.

It was a great show. It didn’t hurt that the lead singer of the equally British opening band The Teasers was going nuts at the front of the crowd. That got everyone enthused.
Great venue too, Ronan. Thanks for arranging that.
