Networks and DVRs
Before you watch your DVRed episode of Heros tonight you might want to know that you’re contributing to the failings of the networks. Bother you? No, me neither. It is interesting how much top shows are DVRed though. Fully 1/3 of Office viewers view it on DVR. Lost has about 23%. I halfway wonder if Lost’s figure is because so many of us don’t have the patience to wait an other hour and avoid commercials.

Rediscoveries
Before Chris Cornell sang James Bond songs, before Audioslave, before Spoonman and Black Hole Sun, there was Soundgarden’s 1991 record Badmotorfinger. My wife just picked me up a copy for five Euros. I’d forgotten all about it, but listening to stuff like Rusty Cage and Mind Riot has been a fun rediscovery.
I saw Soundgarden a couple of days after Kurt Cobain blew his head off. It was a moody gig and bassist Ben Shepherd walked off stage near the end and didn’t reappear (as he was wont to do, apparently). No doubt Susan will tell us about hanging out with Cornell and Kim Thayil (one hairy beast of a guitarist) back in the day.
I can only take so much of Cornell’s bellowing, but Soundgarden were good stuff. Useless trivia: drummer Matt Cameron now plays with Pearl Jam, another example of Seattle inbreeding. Read the rest of this entry
Comics on DVD
I’m not really a huge comic guy. I largely stopped buying comics right around the time I was 13 or 14 and discovered computers. However I do have pretty fond memories of my comic days. Back when I was a kid I’d collect bottles at the tourist town I spent my summers in. I’d actually make quite a bit of money, all things considered. (And I worked pretty hard at it – going to all the dumpsters in the camp grounds for alcohol and pop bottles) Then I’d not only buy the new comics I wanted, but would get old comics from the 60′s. I don’t know why but I really loved the Marvel stuff from their golden age up through the first few years of the 70′s. After that I thought Marvel kind of lost it, with a few exceptions in the early 80′s. (X-Men was quite good there for a while)
Anyway I bring all this up to note that Marvel is now putting complete editions of comics on DVD. Personally I’d rather have a collection of a variety of comics from a particular decade. But hey, that’s me. I have to admit though that had I spare change laying around (which right now I don’t) I’d love to pick up a few of these.
Heaven and Hell, Megadeth, & Machine Head Los Angeles, CA 4-25-07
I took my youngest son to see Heaven and Hell w/Megadeth and Machine Head on Wednesday. He’s a huge Megadeth fan. Heaven and Hell, for those who don’t know, is basically Black Sabbath w/Dio on vocals rather than Ozzy.
I’m a little in love with Dave Mustaine now.

Band spotlight: Sunshine Underground
All hail the rather excellent Indie-dance band, the Sunshine Underground. The lads are originally from Shropshire (sleepy, rural county bordering Wales), but formed in Leeds and subsequently earned the Live Band of the Year trophy at the Leeds Music Awards. Their debut album, Raise The Alarm, was released in August 2006.
Bassist Daly Smith agreed to tell us a bit about the band: Read the rest of this entry
