Finding hidden gems
I bring my music to work with me on an external hard drive. I have a long commute and often before leaving work I’ll burn a mix cd to listen to on my ride home. (If you’ve heard either of my podcasts, you know what these mixes are like.) I have huge piles of them in my car, hidden in different cubbyholes. (Probably close to 200 of them, including full albums I burn to listen to as well.)
Lately I’ve been having trouble deciding what to listen to, so I started going through mix cds in my car that aren’t marked, just to see what’s on them. I came across a real gem. Here’s the tracklist:
1. Confessor – “Sour Times”
2. Indigo Girls – “Closer to Fine”
3. Ronettes – “Be My Baby”
4. KD Lang – “So It Shall Be”
5. Mountain Goats – “Have to Explode”
6. Nick Drake – “Pink Moon”
7. Alice in Chains – “Rooster”
8. Husker Du – “Ice Cold Ice”
9. Pentagram – “Live Free & Burn”
10. Carole King – “Natural Woman”
11. Jane’s Addiction – “Jane Says”
12. Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Sweet Home Alabama”
13. Replacements – “Androgynous”
14. New Order – “Leave Me Alone”
15. Doobie Brothers – “Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)”
16. Tracy Chapman – “For My Lover”
17. Waterboys – “A Bang on the Ear”
18. Madness – “It Must Be Love”
I’ll post a few to the radio.blog. (Any requests?)

This morning I revisited Rush albums for the first time in years. Some of it was still fun to listen to. I still like the Permanent Waves album.
I’ve been unsure of what I want to listent to as well. I’ve been mulling over the possibility of listening to more classical music – particularly music for piano.
Maybe you could throw on the Rooster song. I haven’t really listened to Alice in Chains much. So I might as well give a song a try.
I’m so jealous of those of you who can listen to music at work. I’d have a much stronger incentive to rip my CDs if I could.
But I can’t. Have to answer the main phone line. Can’t have the Social D blasting in the background when I do.
I’d like to hear Husker Du.
BTW Susan, if we’re talking about finding hidden gems here, you might want to listen to Amon Tobin’s piece called “Creatures.” Or maybe you already know about it.
I sort of stumbled across it. It’s not exactly a song. But it’s very interesting to listen to. I’ve tried listening to an Amon Tobin album all the way through – it’s not very easy because of the way he uses sound. Still, it’s interesting stuff.
Husker Du and AIC are both posted to the radio.blog now.
I don’t have that song, Dan, but I know where to look for it.
William: headphones.
Susan:
If only. We have to be able to pounce on the phone. It’s the price one pays for the glamorous life of a low-level public relations flack.
Not that I do much flacking.
