Tom - I saw this last week at the movies here in Austria. I really liked it. Christian Bale is an underrated actor. I thought he and Hugh Jackman both were wonderful. Having said that, I did guess the Alfred twist pretty soon after the two door trick, but it didn't lessen the enjoyment of watching it to the end. And what accent was David Bowie supposed to be doing? It kept changing!

I thought visually it was lovely, and thought the story very well told. Seemingly insignificant things (like Alfred's wounded hand bleeding again) were all shown to be significant, as it fell into place at the end.

It's definitely a film I'd recommend too.

Having recently watched both movies within a relatively short time frame, I agree with Tom that The Prestige is the better of the two movies. It requires a bit more thought to follow the story, but the viewer definitely is rewarded.

This movie just came in from Netflix yesterday. I've been looking forward to seeing it for awhile. I couldn't help but notice that a few reviewers thought it was the best movie of 2006 or in the top ten movies of 2006.

SuperG,
I didn't even look at the extras. I never expect much from first edition DVD's. And I also don't pay attention to the sound format. All I have is the built-in TV speakers. But according to this review, the extras suck (a 19 minute making of, some stills, and no audio commentary) and the sound is Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound.

Wendy,
I also like The Illusionist. It gets points for being less showy, I suppose, but I also found it less entertaining and I wasn't real convinced by the love story part of it and I felt like it cheated a bit with the magic. I would recommend both movies, but for anyone who is going to see only one movie involving magicians in the early 1900's, it's gotta be The Prestige.

I really enjoyed this movie--such a dark bit of fun. My main complaint was it was almost too much, but I was surprised by the ending and found it wildly imaginative.

I shouldn't compare, because they are very different, but I prefer the other "magic" movie that came out around the same time--The Illusionist with Edward Norton. It had a simpler storyline that I found overall more satisfying, even though I guessed the ending early on.

Both movies get a thumbs up from me.
