I had to vote for the piece of the Abbey Road medley. In my opinion it is the single greatest musical acheivement in the last 50 years.
The Final Countdown wins, mostly because Gob endorses it.
REM wins a Rory for most gratuitous use of the name “Leonard Bernstein” in a song.
I love (LOVE!) Abby Road, but I have to say I’ve always been irritated by the medley. It just sounds like several woulda-been-great songs that a band on its way down slapped together and never bothered to finish.
Then again, I can’t handle the vocals on “The Final Countdown” and I’m tired of the REM pick, great as it is. I’m mulling. This may take a while. I may have to come back to the question when I’m in a happier mood.
Geez grumpy!!
But can you really argue with anything I’ve said? I may be grumpy, but I’m right.
since all you said was that you are irritated by the medley, it’s tough to argue! I agree — you’re irritated by the medley.
Now, I think you’re smoking crack if you don’t completely love the medley forever.
No, I said the medley sounds like several songs that would be great if anyone had bothered to finish them. And (in so many words) that the REM song has unfortunately been played to death.
I’ll agree with you on your second point, but not at all on your first. NO, NO, NO.
I just cast my vote for the medley. Unfinished or no, it’s at least clips of songs that never get old.
Yes, yes yes!
maybe if you were Superallison I’d agree. but no.
I’m tempted to vote for The Final Countdown, but I prefer this version so much more.
Agree with the pregnant lady- just agree with her!
Beatles medley all the way. Back when it was about albums, the “second side” of Abbey Road was my favorite thing ever.
Golden Slumbers is simply a gorgeous set of lyrics and Carry That Weight has got some of my favorite beats to it.
“The Final Countdown” is a musical abomination.
I gotta go with Gob.
Tracy, I thought it was just BTD Greg that had to agree with Allison. For the sake of all, I humbly accept her word as Bible.
Agghhh. I’m a Beatlemaniac, so I feel I have to vote for the Abbey Road selection, but I really really really like that REM song (even if it has been played to death). Hmmm. Tough choice tonight.
Nobody *has* to agree with me. My being right has absolutely nothing to do with my being pregnant.*
*Actually, my grumpiness yesterday was also due to a confluence of factors not related to pregnancy.
I agree with SuperAllison.
I wish the Beatles had finished these songs and yet even in medley form they are a stunning musical acheivement. Gotta go with it. I dig the REM song but I’ve played it too many times in cover bands to be able to take it any more…
REM hands down. I’ve always loved this song (despite the play it gets), but the context in which it was written makes me love it even more. Apparently Michael Stipe went to a debate tournament and was appalled by what he saw — namely, constant cries about the end of the world coming from people who were (often) very well educated on the critical issues of the day but who cared only about using this vital information to win meaningless debates (at mock speed no less — e.g., “listen to yourself churn”).
The most damning lines: “A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.”
Ouch.
