Huzzah!

The Beatles’ “She’s Leaving Home” won handily last week, garnering 12 of 22 votes. Good job to those who identified the theme: relocation.

    1. Free Fiona!

    2. Man this is tough. I like Fiona but she’s nowhere near the genius of Stevie Nicks. But “Wonder” is a personal favorite. So tough.

    3. I like the rambling, riffing nature of Fiona’s songs. She has a lot of untapped creativity.

Natalie Merchant is possibly the smartest of all three — her songs reflect a lot of intelligence. But she doesn’t have Stevie’s grit.

    4. I like Natalie Merchant, and I enjoy her voice, but I think her “smartness” is overrated. Although I dig many of her songs, if you examine them closely, they reek of coffee shop pseudo-intellectualism. Also, my impression of her dropped when she left 10,000 maniacs. Her solo stuff is not as musically satisfying.

She gets brownie points for acting as Michael Stipes putative girlfriend in the ’80s though.

I haven’t decided who to vote for yet.

    5. I voted for Merchant, despite the fact that I wanted to Michael Stipe’s girlfriend in the 80s.

    6. Wow, three excellent songs. My vote had to go to Fiona. I love “Wonder” and there’s no doubt “Edge of Seventeen” is great, but I could listen to “Paper Bag” over and over again.

    7. Damn South Park!

My head is filled with bleating goats.

I’m not into Fiona Apple, but that is an excellent song.
