  1. Glad to see this is up. :) But wow … unless I listen to the songs, I am completely unqualified to make a pick on this one. I’m not familiar with anything but the names of some of the bands.

  2. Oh Canada! You give us such good music. Although my reason for choosing “Letter from an Occupant” is non-Canadian: Neko Case–her vocals on that track are fantastic. Write in candidates for Canada Day: Arcade Fire, the Dears, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Stars…

    and Bryan Adams.

  3. Letter from an Occupant rules! I love that song. Neko’s vocals are amazing on nearly everything – she never misses a note. Plus, she gets extra points from me for being a hottie.

  4. That’s Neko Case singing on the Pornographers track? I never would’ve recognized her.

These are all great songs, but the only one I’ve heard before is the Cowboy Junkies. They’re Canadian? I think I’m gonna have to go with the New Pornographers. So catchy.

  5. I’m voting for the Weakerthans, but as you know Steve, I’m biased. I like “Sweet Jane” a lot, but I prefer “Misguided Angel” if we’re talking Cowboy Junkies. In the end though, if I’m taking Canadian music with me to this desert island, I’m taking The Rheostatics.

  6. Rheostatics, eh? A fine choice, Kris. I could only post three picks!

Actually, my favorite Cowboy Junkies song isn’t Sweet Jane – it’s “Cause Cheap Is How I Feel.” But I couldn’t bear to see it lose.

  7. Man, Steve, you say that a lot: “I can’t bear to see [insert song] lose.” Pluck up some courage and battle with those songs!

  8. There are lots of good Cowboy Junkies songs to choose from. I might have chosen “Sun Comes Up, It’s Tuesday Morning.” Their version of Sweet Jane is good, but I really, truly hated the Oliver Stone Natural Born Killers radio edit that got played for a while. It kind of tainted the song for me.

I’m not sure why it is that Neko Case sounds completely different with New Pornographers than she does solo. I guess it’s because she doesn’t write any of the music for the Pornographers and they always have her sing crazy melodies.

I’ve got to listen a bit more before I vote.

  9. Greg, this isn’t “Best of Canada” week or anything. Neil is biding his time.

  10. Give week 7 a chance! It hasn’t been 4 days — and less than 20 people have voted…

  11. week 7 is over! [singing] 4 daaays a week… is way to much to spend on Canada… 4 daaays a week… shows Canada how much I care…[/singing]

Unless the plan is to post on Mondays instead of Fridays.
